For the first time in a while, I'm not so sure about Diablo 4's latest loot experiment. The prevailing complaint about the current season in Lord of Hatred is that Blizzard made the benefits of its strongest items too random compared to what we had in previous seasons. While Blizzard is working on a solution to that in its next season, it's also leaning even harder into uncertainty by gutting the only items we could really rely on.
Mythic Uniques, Diablo 4's rarest and strongest items, will no longer be Mythic Uniques at all for season 14: Mythic will instead be a variant for all the Unique items in the game. Basically, this means the items that were once the ultimate tier of loot—and came with guaranteed stats on them—won't exist anymore.
Instead, Mythic versions of Uniques will occasionally drop and can be created through the new crafting system introduced in Lord of Hatred. Mythic Uniques won't have set stats, though, nor will they have new skill-enhancing powers on them. The only difference between a Mythic Unique and a regular Unique will be that the stats on them are locked to their highest values.
Theoretically, this solves the problem where some old Mythic Uniques were ignored because of their mediocre stats. There's a staff that randomly gives you powerful shrine buffs (periodic explosions, unlimited mana, etc.) that nobody used because the stats on it weren't particularly good. With the changes in season 14, it's possible you'll find one or craft one that might work for your build. Might.
The biggest issue I see with this change is the loss of knowing your desired Uniques will be powerful the moment you see them drop. Every top build uses the Heir of Perdition helmet for the surplus of rare stats on it and its whopping 80% damage boost. When you see that helmet drop, you know you're about to become a god.
In season 14, though, Heir of Perdition will only have movement speed guaranteed on it and its damage boost will be knocked all the way down to 15%. You'll probably trash more of them than you ever have before.
An example of the new Mythic Uniques for season 14. (Image credit: Blizzard Entertainment)I imagine Blizzard's reasoning for dramatically nerfing almost every old Mythic Unique is because they can now all drop as regular Uniques. To maintain some semblance of balance, their absurdly strong powers will have to come back down to Earth if they're not locked behind hours and hours of grinding. But I kind of liked the concept of having a small set of items that felt like stumbling onto powerful ancient artifacts that could transform your build.
Season 14 will remove that pinnacle tier of loot and replace it with items that will only be good if you're lucky. It opens the door for more Uniques to be dusted off and used for once, but it makes the late-game loot chase extremely RNG-heavy and grindy in a way that I'm not looking forward to.
Nothing is set in stone yet, however. Blizzard will be letting us test out all of this on a PTR starting June 2. I won't be surprised if some of the specifics on how these new Mythic Uniques work will change before the season properly comes out. My hope is that there's some kind of middle ground that doesn't completely tarnish the value of the old Mythics while still allowing some flexibility for the weaker ones.
