Air Bud Returns Confirms Original Dog Buddy Is Canonically Dead
The world has officially lost a legend: Air Bud is dead. In the latest revelation from the franchise's upcoming reboot, Air Bud Returns, first screened at CinemaCon on Tuesday, it was confirmed that the movie exists within the continuity of the original films but acknowledges a somber truth—the canonical golden retriever Buddy has passed away. This 15th entry in the long-running series introduces a new narrative where Fernfield honors the deceased star with a memorial statue featuring a basketball.
The film centers on Jacob Morgan, played by Aydin Artis, an adolescent boy who uses a wheelchair due to a physical disability. After his father died, Jacob moved to Fernfield to take care of a stray golden retriever he names Buddy. The story takes a poignant turn as the new dog looks up to the memory of the original star, eventually inspired by old videotapes and his own namesake to become a basketball player.
A Grounded Approach to Family Storytelling
Writer-director Robert Vince explains that acknowledging the death of the original Air Bud makes total sense for the story he is telling. While the franchise maintains its signature "mythical kind of magical whimsicalness," Vince insists on grounding the narrative in reality rather than a fairyland setting. He believes families crave stories where they can learn valuable lessons without the plot being dumbed down.
"I think that now, more story-wise, I'm always wanting to ground our stories in reality," Vince stated backstage. "We don't take ourselves seriously, but we take the movie seriously in some ways."
The director's perspective is deeply personal, drawing from his own life as a grandfather with five grandkids who often ask about their family golden retriever, Brody. Vince refuses to lie to children by suggesting any dog lives forever. Instead, he prioritizes honesty and emotional authenticity in how the franchise handles such heavy topics.
The Search for a New Star and John Oliver's Roast
The casting process for the new star was rigorous, with Vince avoiding CGI entirely to ensure the basketball-playing canine felt real. This commitment to practical effects faced public scrutiny from Last Week Tonight host John Oliver, who famously ribbed the franchise over its search for a replacement dog. However, Vince remains unbothered by the comedy, viewing it as "fun" and even beneficial to the brand's image.
Vince emphasizes that finding a dog capable of playing basketball is incredibly difficult without digital enhancement, noting that the original Air Bud was truly one of a kind. He welcomed Oliver's humor, stating:
- Humor in a tasteful manner is great for any franchise.
- Being poked fun at shows people are engaged with the material.
- Using social media to find the best real dog was the only viable path forward.
- The team respects the original star while building a new legacy.
Looking Toward January 2027
The emotional core of Air Bud Returns also involves Jacob's grandfather, former pro basketball player Jake Morgan (Edwin Lee Gibson). After moving to Fernfield following his son's death, Jake joins the staff of the school team, the Fernfield Timberwolves, bridging generations through the sport. Together with Jacob and the new stray dog, they navigate life in a town that still reveres the memory of the original Buddy.
The film aims to balance the franchise's lighthearted spirit with these deeper themes of loss and resilience. Fans can expect this emotional journey when Air Bud Returns opens in theaters on January 22, 2027.
