Alienware is officially upgrading its flagship lineup. Starting Wednesday, April 22, Area-51 gaming PCs will feature the AMD Ryzen X3D2 (9950X3D2). This marks the first significant update to Alienware's AMD chip offerings since the company began selling Area-51 desktops with Ryzen X3D chips last November.
Massive Cache Boost with the Ryzen X3D2
The new 9950X3D2 chip is very similar to its predecessor, the 9950X3D, but it introduces a notable improvement in L2 and L3 cache. This specialized memory stores frequently accessed data to streamline performance during heavy workloads. The Ryzen X3D2 features 208MB of AMD's 3D V-cache, compared to the 144MB found in its predecessor.
While more cache can mean more responsive performance for gaming, rendering, and compiling, this extra headroom comes with some trade-offs:
- Power Draw: The chip will draw 200W, up from the 170W seen in the previous model.
- Boost Clock: The new CPU has a slightly lower boost clock speed of 5.6GHz, versus 5.7GHz on the older chip.
The Ryzen X3D2 performance gap will likely widen, as the 9950X3D already almost always outperformed competing processors in our reviews last year. Despite the slight drop in clock speed, we expect this change to have a minimal impact on actual gaming performance.
Pricing and Availability
Alienware has not yet announced official pricing for this new configuration. We have reached out for more details and will update this report if we receive a response before the new option goes live tomorrow.
For context, the minimum spec for an Area-51 desktop with a Ryzen 9 9950X3D costs $4,099.99. Consequently, it is likely that this new model will be even more expensive.
