The wait for a definitive release date might be nearing its end. Jonathan Rogers, the game director of Path of Exile 2, is focused on one goal: moving past the early access phase and delivering a finished product.

The upcoming Return of the Ancients expansion (patch 0.5.0) marks a massive turning point for the title. According to Rogers, this will be the final major expansion before the game officially launches into version 1.0 later this year.

What to Expect from Return of the Ancients

The Return of the Ancients update is far more than a simple content drop; it is a fundamental rework of the game's core loop. Grinding Gear Games has spent months restructuring the post-campaign experience to ensure players don't feel lost once the main story concludes.

Key changes in patch 0.5.0 include:

  • Guided Endgame: The post-campaign grind is being transformed into a structured, guided experience featuring specific quests and boss fights.
  • The Atlas Overhaul: The sprawling Atlas world map and its interlocking mechanics have been upgraded to be more intuitive and customizable.
  • Integrated Systems: Improvements aim to ensure the transition from campaign to endgame feels seamless, rather than like two separate games joined together.

While the update introduces a more directed path for players who may not want an infinite sandbox, Rogers noted that the goal is to make the game feel "complete" even before the 1.0 transition.

The Road to Path of Exile 2 Version 1.0

While we don't have a specific launch date for the full release yet, Rogers confirmed during a recent press event that it will arrive shortly after ExileCon this November. While there may be minor balance patches or small leagues in the interim, no other large-scale expansions are planned before the 1.0 milestone.

The transition to 1.0 will bring significant content, including:

  • The final two acts of the main campaign.
  • Every ascendancy (sub-class) for the existing character classes.

However, not all promised features will be present at launch. Only a portion of the five previously announced classes will be available, and certain new weapon types, such as swords, may miss the 1.0 window.

Rogers expressed a clear desire to move away from the heavy lifting required for major expansions. "I want to get this game finished. I really, really do," Rogers stated, noting his eagerness to return to regular league development.

Return of the Ancients is scheduled to drop on May 29, providing the first major look at how the revamped endgame will function before the game officially leaves early access.
