Baldur’s Gate 2 (And Probably The Original) Reportedly Getting Remakes

BioWare’s Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate 2, two of the most revered RPGs in gaming history, are reportedly being remade. According to PC Gamer, Wizards of the Coast, the parent company of Dungeons & Dragons, is working on a Baldur’s Gate 2 remake. Additionally, there are indications that a remake of the original Baldur’s Gate may also be in the works.

Kevin Martins, a former BioWare developer and co-lead designer on Baldur’s Gate 2, is reportedly involved in the project. Martins is currently part of Archetype Entertainment, a subsidiary of Wizards of the Coast, working on the upcoming space-RPG Exodus. His involvement suggests that the remake may be handled with the same level of care and attention that defined the original games.

At this point, few concrete details are available about what these remakes might entail or when they could be released. Both Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate 2 are vast, complex titles, and remaking them would be a significant undertaking. While some might expect them to resemble Larian Studios' Baldur’s Gate 3, which has been a massive success, it’s worth noting that Baldur’s Gate 3 was developed using Larian’s proprietary engine, which is different from the tools that Wizards of the Coast may use for their remakes.

For those curious about how the original Baldur’s Gate might look in the context of Baldur’s Gate 3, there’s a mod available that brings the experience to the newer game. This mod allows players to explore the original game’s content within the updated engine, offering a glimpse of what a potential remake might look like.

Both Baldur’s Gate and its sequel received remasters from Beamdog in 2012 and 2013, respectively. These remasters added modern enhancements such as support for high-resolution displays, bug fixes, and cross-play multiplayer for Baldur’s Gate 2. The original Baldur’s Gate was first released in 1998, with the sequel following in 2000. These games are considered seminal classics within the RPG genre and helped establish BioWare as a household name.

With the massive success of Baldur’s Gate 3—which won numerous Game of the Year Awards in 2023 and has sold over 20 million copies—it makes sense that Wizards of the Coast would want to continue the franchise’s momentum. However, Larian Studios, the developers of Baldur’s Gate 3, has stated it will not be working on Baldur’s Gate 4, instead focusing on its own Divinity series. This leaves Wizards of the Coast in a somewhat challenging position, but the company is reportedly working on a Baldur’s Gate 3 television show from Craig Mazin, the showrunner of Chernobyl and The Last of Us, which will continue the events and storylines from Larian’s RPG.

The Baldur’s Gate remakes are just one of several Dungeons & Dragons-based games currently in development at Wizards of the Coast. Another notable project is Warlock, a sword-and-sorcery game that was announced last year at The Game Awards. Additionally, Wizards of the Coast recently canceled a Dungeons & Dragons game from Stig Asmussen, the director of Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, who has since launched his own studio.
