Bethesda Boss Todd Howard Saw Marvel's Blade in May, Says Arkane 'Doing a Really, Really Great Job'

Todd Howard, head of Bethesda Game Studios, has shared a recent update on Marvel's Blade, the long-in-development vampire-slaying superhero game. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Howard revealed that he had recently viewed the latest progress from the Deathloop team at Arkane Lyon. However, he was tight-lipped about when fans might expect further news.

"I'm not at liberty to say when [we'll see more]," Howard teased, "but I saw some stuff just yesterday [on May 21] and the folks at Arkane [Studios, the developers] are doing a really, really great job." While this may not be a groundbreaking update, it’s a welcome sign after years of silence and uncertainty surrounding the project, especially as the Xbox division has faced its share of challenges.

The Uncertain Future of Marvel's Blade

Fans have been worried about the game’s future, particularly after it was absent from the 2026 Xbox Games Showcase. The absence raised red flags, especially with reports of potential studio shutdowns for other developers like Ninja Theory, Double Fine, and Compulsion Games. These developments only heightened fears that Arkane Lyon and Marvel's Blade might be next on the list.

Microsoft's gaming division is currently undergoing a period of restructuring under new CEO Asha Sharma. While IGN has reached out to Microsoft regarding the reported cuts and to Marvel Games specifically about Marvel's Blade, neither has provided a response yet. This lack of clarity has only added to the uncertainty surrounding the project.

What We Know About Marvel's Blade

According to an official description, Marvel’s Blade follows Eric Brooks, the legendary Daywalker, who is half-man, half-vampire and caught between the world of the living and the power of the undead. The game is a mature, single-player, third-person title set in the heart of Paris and is currently in development in collaboration with Marvel Games.

Announced back in December 2023, Marvel's Blade still has no confirmed release date. That means fans will have to wait three years for another official look at the project when The Game Awards roll around later this year.

Until then, the only glimpses of the game are concept art and a few scattered reveals. One such reveal was our original coverage from 2023, where we called Blade "Marvel's secret weapon."

While we wait for Blade to unsheathe his sword and sharpen his fangs, fans can still explore the game's visual direction through the concept art released so far.
