Brandon Sanderson Says He'll Start Working on His Mistborn Era 3 Book Again in July

Brandon Sanderson has been keeping an incredibly busy schedule lately. Between developing the Mistborn screenplay for Apple TV, collaborating on various board game adaptations, and maintaining his weekly podcast and audience updates, his creative output is massive. However, these high-profile side projects have temporarily paused his progress on new novels, a fact he addressed in his latest YouTube update.

Update on Mistborn Era 3 and Ghostbloods

While fans are eager for more stories from the Cosmere, Sanderson clarified that his focus has shifted toward Hollywood obligations. He specifically addressed the timeline for the upcoming installment of the Mistborn saga.

"Ghostbloods I still intend to get back to, probably in July, but I need to be doing some movie stuff right now," Sanderson stated. "Ghostbloods is scheduled for December 2028, which means that I need to turn it in December 2026. So, I got about seven months until I need to turn that in."

Although the work isn't immediately pressing, Sanderson has been transparent with his readers about his heavy involvement in film production. According to his website, the first draft of Ghostbloods is already complete; the remaining task is a full revision to prepare it for its 2028 release.

The Timeline for Mistborn Era 3

Sanderson has reassured his audience that while Hollywood takes up significant time, it shouldn't derail his literary schedule. He has proactively built these gaps into his publishing roadmap.

  • Ghostbloods Revision: Expected to begin after July.
  • Second Book Deadline: Must be turned in by December next year.
  • Target Release Date: December 2028.

Exploring the World of Mistborn Era 3

For those following the sprawling Cosmere universe, Ghostbloods marks a massive shift in setting as the first book in Mistborn Era 3. While details on plot and character remain under wraps, the Coppermind wiki suggests this trilogy will take place during an early computer age, featuring technology reminiscent of the 1980s. Sanderson has even teased that a Mistborn Era 4 space opera is already in his long-term planning stages.

While readers wait for the next chapter of the Mistborn saga, Sanderson continues to expand the franchise through tabletop gaming. He is releasing a new collaboration with Brotherwise titled Shards of Creation.

Sanderson noted that his goal with these games is accessibility: "I do want some games that people who are not game people can play. I did like the Mistborn Deckbuilder a lot, but I like to go to my friend's house or brother's house and teach me really quick and then play a fun game."

If you are looking to dive into the Cosmere via tabletop, Shards of Creation is available for preorder starting Friday, May 22.
