The Legacy of Argonaut Games
British studio Argonaut Games has been responsible for some of the most memorable titles of the '90s and early 2000s. Their impressive portfolio includes the original Star Fox for the Super Nintendo, a game based on The Ren & Stimpy Show, and the iconic 3D platformer Croc.
After a 17-year absence, founder Jez San officially reopened the studio in 2024. This revival has already seen success with a remaster of the 1997 classic Croc Legend of the Gobbos. Fans of the era clearly have an appetite for the studio's nostalgic catalog, and now, all eyes are on Buck Bumble.
Why Buck Bumble is Back in the Spotlight
While characters like Croc are instantly recognizable by their whimsical snouts, Buck Bumble has faded from the public consciousness. The 1998 Nintendo 64 third-person shooter featured a cyborg bumblebee tasked with eliminating evil in a version of London set in 2010.
The game's design felt remarkably similar to Argonaut's work on Star Fox. It featured:
- An airborne shooter gameplay loop
- A cutesy, stylized art direction
- An abundance of collectibles
- Fog-smattered, free-ranging levels
Clues Pointing to a Buck Bumble Remaster
While the studio hasn't officially confirmed a project, recent social media activity strongly suggests that a Buck Bumble remake is on the way. The official Argonaut Games Bluesky account recently posted a cryptic message that has fans buzzing.
"Right about now Buck Bumble is officially your new wholesome 4/20 mascot, and we will not be taking further questions... at this time," the studio shared. "But stay tuned to BEE sure to follow us for forthcoming news and announcements!"
The accompanying video provides the most compelling evidence for a remaster. The footage showcases a high-resolution version of the character alongside a newly updated, hi-res Buck Bumble logo. Even if it isn't a ground-breaking new title, bringing this 1998 shooter back to life would be a significant victory for game preservation.
