Bungie Announces Layoffs as Destiny 2 Development Concludes

With Destiny 2 now complete, Bungie has announced a "reduction in force" as it reorganizes its team. The studio stated that it could no longer operate at its previous size due to the conclusion of Destiny 2 development and the early stages of new projects. In an unattributed message, Bungie acknowledged the difficult nature of the decision, emphasizing the profound impact it has on those affected and their loved ones.

"Destiny 2 fell short of expectations these past several years," Bungie’s message began, a sentiment that is hard to dispute. The game has faced significant challenges in recent years, leading to frustration among fans and even causing some of its top figures, like Tim Clark and Phil Savage, to voice concerns about its future. However, despite these struggles, Destiny 2 is currently seeing strong player numbers on Steam, with some attributing the surge to nostalgia or a final farewell from longtime fans.

Sony’s Statement and Commitment to Bungie’s Future

Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony's Studio Business Group, released a statement regarding the layoffs. He noted that Sony and Bungie leadership had reviewed the studio’s long-term direction, development priorities, and resource needs. After exploring multiple alternatives, they concluded that a reduction in force was necessary to align the studio’s resources with its current priorities and long-term goals.

Hulst emphasized that Marathon, Bungie’s upcoming project, remains an important part of Sony’s portfolio. He stated that Sony will continue to support Bungie’s team as they build on the strong foundation established in the first two seasons of Destiny 2 and as they work on incubation efforts for future projects.

Despite this support, questions remain about the future of Bungie. The situation bears a striking resemblance to BioWare, whose future feels uncertain despite its work on Mass Effect 4. While Hulst has committed to Bungie’s future through Marathon and other projects, the recent layoffs may signal a turning point for the studio.

Bungie did not disclose the number of employees affected by the layoffs but mentioned that it will share more about its future plans in the coming weeks. For now, the focus remains on Destiny 2's legacy and the uncertain path ahead for Bungie and its new projects.
