Bungie Devs Have Resurrected an Obscene Amount of Guns for Destiny 2's Final Update

As Destiny 2 prepares to enter its retirement, Bungie is ensuring it goes out with a bang. The Monument of Triumph update, the last major content addition for the game, brings a flood of new and returning weaponry to its various loot pools. From reviving long-absent favorites to giving neglected exotics a powerful catalyst boost, the developers have reworked an impressive number of weapons—so much so that one dev joked about the physical toll it took on them.

According to a post from Bungie’s communications manager, dmg04, on X, one of the Destiny 2 sandbox developers said, “my body physically hurts from the amount of items we were updating and implementing.” While the statement might be a bit of a hyperbolic exaggeration, it underscores the sheer scale of the Monument of Triumph update.

A Major Armory Revamp

Based on the updates previewed in Bungie’s Dev Insights blogs, the Monument of Triumph update is arguably the most substantial armory revamp Destiny 2 has received since its launch. Here are some key highlights:

  • Patrol destinations are now getting updated loot pools with tiered drops, including returning weapons that match the region's theme. For example, Cosmodrome will offer returning Rasputin guns, while Nessus will feature returning Vex weapons.
  • Gambit is getting its own slate of tiered, reprised Drifter guns, which could make players a bit inconsolable if they don’t get a shiny new Parcel of Stardust.
  • The Sparrow Racing League is back, offering a new set of shooting and slashing implements.
  • Crucible, Trials, and Iron Banner will all see expanded loot pools with reprised and tiered favorites, new armor sets, and a scattering of new guns, including the return of Better Devils.
  • Solo Ops, Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, and Arena Ops each have their own weapon pools, with Arena Ops featuring reprised Black Armory weapons, including Kindled Orchid.

Expanding the Loot Landscape

The Monument of Triumph update also includes tiered versions of weapons and armor from pre-Edge of Fate dungeons and raids. New and existing tiered guns will offer an option to upgrade their gear tiers, and all legendary crafted weapons will be eligible for conversion into upgradable tiered guns.

All exotic weapons will now have catalysts, a feature that was previously absent from some. Nine of these weapons, which originally had catalysts that only gave stats, have now received perks as well—adding a new layer of customization and power for players.

Bittersweet Updates

As with many of the changes in the Monument of Triumph update, the excitement is tinged with bittersweetness. The unprecedented scale of the armory additions raises questions about what might have been. Were these changes originally meant to lead into further updates, or were they patches that Bungie’s developers might have made under different circumstances?

In a post on X, dmg04 wrote, “We're listening,” echoing a familiar refrain for Destiny players. “Hope you feel it.” These words capture the sentiment of a community that has endured years of uncertainty, yet remains hopeful for the final send-off of a game that has been a cornerstone of the FPS and MMO genres.
