The Adventures of Cliff Booth Lands IMAX Release Date Ahead of Netflix Debut

Fans of David Fincher are getting a major reason to head back to the cinema this autumn. Netflix has officially announced that The Adventures of Cliff Booth will receive an exclusive two-week run in IMAX theaters starting November 25th. Following its high-profile theatrical window, the film is scheduled to arrive on Netflix on December 23rd.

This release strategy mirrors how Netflix handled the Knives Out sequels, providing a limited theatrical experience before a holiday streaming debut. Interestingly, the film has stepped into an IMAX slot vacated by Greta Gerwig’s Narnia project, which was recently pushed back to February 2027.

David Fincher Returns to the Big Screen

For many cinephiles, this marks a significant moment for director David Fincher. His last wide-release theatrical film was the 2014 hit Gone Girl. Since then, Fincher has maintained a prolific partnership with Netflix, delivering acclaimed projects such as:

  • Mindhunter
  • Mank
  • The Killer

While The Killer received a limited theatrical rollout, the scale of this new project suggests a much more substantial return to large-format filmmaking.

The Origins and Cast of The Adventures of Cliff Booth

The film's history is as intriguing as its premise. Originally conceived by Quentin Tarantino, the project stalled when the director lost interest. Brad Pitt subsequently brought the concept to Fincher, receiving full blessing from Tarantino to take the helm.

While specific plot details remain under wraps, the story follows Pitt’s character, Cliff Booth, navigating life as a Hollywood fixer during the 1970s. The cast features several notable names:

  • Timothy Olyphant (expected to reprise his role as James Stacy)
  • Elizabeth Debicki
  • Yahya Abdul-Mateen II
  • Scott Caan
  • Carla Gugino
  • Peter Weller

Notably, Leonardo DiCaprio was reportedly offered a supporting role but ultimately declined, meaning he will not be reprising his connection to the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood universe.

Where Does This Leave Quentin Tarantino?

As Fincher prepares for his IMAX debut, Tarantino remains on the hunt for his final masterpiece. Adhering to his strict rule of only directing ten films to preserve a succinct filmography, the director explained on The Church of Tarantino podcast that he walked away from this project because it didn't feel different enough from his previous work. He continues to search for uncharted territory for his tenth and final film.
