While Crimson Desert's story has been criticized for being nonsensical and barely-there, the man behind the motion capture for Kliff believes the game still delivers. Trevor McEwan, the actor providing movement for the protagonist, recently addressed these narrative shortcomings during a recent Reddit interaction.
Addressing the Criticism of Crimson Desert's Story
As spotted by GamesRadar, McEwan popped up on the Crimson Desert subreddit a few days ago. While he initially intended to host a full Q&A at a later date, he ended up engaging in a mini-session within the comments of his post anyway.
During this exchange, fans asked about everything from his fellow cast members to his favorite wrestling move—which, naturally, is the R&O. However, the conversation eventually turned toward the divisive nature of the game's plot.
The debate regarding Crimson Desert's story isn't new. Many players have struggled with stilted dialogue and a plot that feels all over the place. McEwan acknowledges this sentiment, even if he doesn't entirely agree with the consensus.
"Yeah, I get that," he responded to a comment regarding the barebones nature of the plot. "But I think what it lacks in narrative it more than makes up for in other aspects. There's also lore hidden across the world as well, if players don't mind a bit of reading."
Gameplay vs. Narrative: Finding the Balance
It is hard to deny that the writing is one of the weaker elements here. However, the game is surrounded by features that make exploration incredibly rewarding:
- Juicy combat mechanics that provide high-intensity encounters.
- An expansive world that is a helluva lot of fun to explore.
- Hidden lore tucked away for those willing to dig deep into the environment.
While I personally need good story and worldbuilding to really sink my teeth into a game, I wouldn't want it to come at the cost of immersive exploration. If recent player polls are any indication, story is only the second most important factor to most gamers. This suggests you might be able to overlook just how strange the narrative feels.
Despite his activity in the comments, McEwan hasn't yet gotten around to a proper Q&A. However, seeing the success of the project has been nothing short of "surreal" for him.
McEwan noted that he has been on an "emotional high for over a month now," adding: "Really love the Crimson Desert community. Truly the best."
