Death Stranding Movie’s Script Is “Almost Done,” Director Says

The Death Stranding movie, being developed by A24 and directed by Michael Sarnoski, is still in the works, but the script is nearing completion. Sarnoski, who is also writing the film, shared an update with IGN, revealing that he is "almost done" with the script. Hideo Kojima, who is producing the movie, has already reviewed drafts and provided feedback, though the specifics of his revisions remain undisclosed.

Sarnoski emphasized the collaborative nature of the project, stating that Kojima has been "really generous" in allowing him to explore his own characters and stories within the Death Stranding universe while staying true to the game's essence. He added that the process has been rewarding and that he's excited to eventually share the film with fans.

A Tribute to Cinema

Sarnoski also noted that Kojima has been impressed with some of the cinematic references he included in the script, such as a nod to the 1985 film Come and See. "He just knows movies incredibly well," Sarnoski said. This isn't surprising, given that Kojima has often cited his deep love for cinema, with reports suggesting that 70% of his body is made up of movie knowledge — a humorous way of saying his passion for film runs deep.

Sarnoski's experience includes directing Pig and A Quiet Place: Day One, and he is set to release The Death of Robin Hood, starring Hugh Jackman, on June 19. His approach to the Death Stranding movie is focused on capturing the emotional and thematic core of the game, while introducing new characters and stories that expand the Death Stranding universe.

Kojima’s Role and Future Projects

Kojima was initially approached to direct the Death Stranding movie, but he declined, choosing instead to focus on producing the film. He has stated that he won't be "involved too much" in the process, as he fears he would "start saying a lot of things" if he were more deeply involved.

The Death Stranding movie is still in early development, and no official announcement has been made regarding the cast or release date. However, Norman Reedus, who portrays the game's protagonist Sam, has expressed openness to returning for the movie. Additionally, an animated movie based on the Death Stranding universe is also in the works, signaling a broader expansion of the franchise.

As for the Death Stranding games themselves, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach was released in June 2025, and Kojima has shared ideas for Death Stranding 3, though he has no plans to direct it himself. He is currently working on two upcoming games: OD and Physint.

A24 is also producing an Elden Ring movie, directed by Alex Garland, who is an Oscar-nominated filmmaker. This marks A24's continued involvement in adapting major video game franchises for the big screen.
