Having already experienced the mountain of changes arriving in the Diablo 4 expansion, Lord of Hatred, I wasn't expecting much from the new season launching shortly after. Because the expansion is so massive, it essentially fulfills the purpose of a traditional season by introducing temporary powers and deep story arcs.
Instead of adding more layers to an already full experience, Blizzard is keeping the focus on the new campaign and the revolutionized loot chase. The Season of Reckoning will be a seasonal event in name only, acting as a period to dive into the expansion's core content.
A Departure from Past Seasons
The Season of Reckoning represents a significant shift in how Blizzard handles seasonal content. While you can still create new seasonal characters and climb through the levels to become a demon-slaying god, nothing you experience will be exclusive to this three-month window.
In a recent blog post, Blizzard acknowledged that this "represents a departure from past seasons," promising that gameplay will return to normal once the season concludes. To make up for the lack of seasonal-specific mechanics, players can earn more rewards than usual by completing seasonal objectives.
Massive Rewards and Seasonal Loot
Blizzard is being unusually generous with endgame progression. Players can earn enough materials to create at least seven powerful mythic uniques—the rarest items in the game—whereas typically you might only get enough for one.
Beyond the raw power, there are several other perks available:
- Free cosmetics, such as a pet crafted from hellish roots.
- Essential crafting materials needed to gear up for the endgame.
- Paid access to the seasonal reliquary for exclusive cosmetics.
Revolutionizing Gameplay with Lord of Hatred
If the expansion content wasn't already impressive, the light season would be a disappointment. However, between activity-specific skill trees and an entire new endgame mode, there is plenty to keep players occupied. The Lord of Hatred expansion brings significant mechanical overhauls that change how the game is played:
- New classes have joined the roster, specifically Warlocks and Paladins.
- Every existing class has received entirely reworked skill trees and items.
- The Horadric Cube has returned, making item crafting a central feature.
- A new fishing mechanic has been introduced, with Blizzard teasing a potential mysterious cow level.

The new season will follow shortly after, officially beginning at 4:30 pm PDT (7:30 pm EDT). You'll have a slim 30-minute window to navigate the login screen before the servers feel the weight of every Diablo fan trying to face Mephisto.
