Released in 2003, Troika’s Temple of Elemental Evil successfully adapted an old-school tabletop adventure into a video game format. By remaining remarkably true to the third edition of the Dungeons & Dragons rules, it captured the essence of a classic campaign. While some players might prefer roaming the village of Hommlet or the piratical cove of Nulb over the massive endgame dungeon, the experience remains an authentic tribute to its tabletop roots.
Following its recent revival on Steam by SNEG, the game has received a significant update that addresses long-standing issues and adds much-requested features.
New Achievements and Bug Fixes for Temple of Elemental Evil
The most notable addition in this update is the implementation of achievements. Modern players often look for these motivational trophies, and SNEG has delivered by integrating them into the Steam version. If you have previously earned any achievements, they should automatically unlock upon loading your save file—though certain location-based achievements will require a return trip to areas like Emridary Meadows or the Moathouse.
Beyond the trophies, several critical gameplay bugs have been addressed:
- Experience Point Fix: A major bug that halted experience gain at level 10 has been resolved.
- Melf's Acid Arrow: Damage calculations now function "as intended."
- Curse Removal: Using scrolls or spells to lift curses is now much more reliable.
Restoring the Importance of XP Spending
The fix regarding experience gain is particularly vital for certain character builds. In the third edition of D&D, players were expected to spend XP to craft magic items. Without a steady stream of experience, high-level "crafter-casters" found themselves without a functional purpose. By allowing players to continue earning points past the level 10 cap, the update restores the utility of these specialized characters.
Whether you are revisiting the classic module for nostalgia or experiencing this D&D CRPG for the first time, SNEG's updated version of The Temple of Elemental Evil is available now on Steam.
