Dragon's Dogma 2 Removes Microtransactions Two Years After Criticism
Dragon's Dogma 2 is a great bit of fun—a chaotic, sometimes overtly cruel action RPG with a great sense of physical humour and some really tactile combat. However, it faced intense backlash during its 2024 launch due to the inclusion of microtransactions that many players found unnecessary and misleading. Now, two years later, Capcom has decided to remove these contentious purchases from the game.
The microtransactions in question included items like wakestones, portcrystals, camping kits, and even the character editor. These were all items that could be obtained through normal gameplay, often for relatively low costs. For example, a book that was part of the character editor could be purchased in-game for 500 rift crystals. This led to accusations that the game was pay-to-win, even though it wasn't. The inclusion of these microtransactions was seen as a poor business decision, especially since the items were not rare or essential to progress.
What's Changing in June
As of June 25, the deluxe edition and a range of microtransactions will no longer be available in Dragon's Dogma 2. This includes the character editor, portcrystals, wakestones, and harpy snares. The only exception is the camping kit, which is a core mechanic in the game. However, even this can be obtained through in-game means, so players will not be forced to purchase it.
Capcom has not officially explained why they included these microtransactions in the first place or why they took two years to remove them. Regardless, the decision has been welcomed by many players. It's a clear indication that the company is listening to feedback and making changes based on player concerns.
The removal of these microtransactions should improve the overall experience for players, making the game more accessible and fair. While it's unclear what other changes are in store for Dragon's Dogma 2, this move is a step in the right direction. Players can now enjoy the game without worrying about unnecessary purchases.
