Electronic Arts has officially announced a massive free base game update for The Sims 4, bringing much-needed changes to player customization and gameplay mechanics. This significant patch focuses on overhaulng the way infants and toddlers function in-game while introducing an entirely new clothing category known as the Base Layer.

New Base Layer Clothing Category Arrives

One of the most exciting additions in this update is the introduction of Base Layer items, designed to allow for deeper customization. These items are intended to be worn underneath existing tops and pants, adding a new level of detail to your Sims' outfits.

The rollout includes a variety of undergarments and foundational pieces, such as:

  • Camisoles
  • Bras
  • Binders
  • Various underclothes

In total, the update brings 14 new base layer items to the game, split between different age groups: eight for adults, four for children, and two for toddlers. To ensure plenty of variety, EA is also providing over 380 color swatches and variants for these new pieces.

Reworked Toddlers and Gameplay Improvements

Beyond clothing, the update features a massive overhaul of how toddlers and infants work within the game engine. This rework aims to refine the life simulation aspects that players have been requesting for several cycles.

The patch also addresses several long-standing technical issues. Notable bug fixes include:

  • A fix for the issue where photographs of Sims would display as entirely black images rather than the actual photo content.
  • Numerous quality-of-life updates derived directly from player feedback on the EA Forums and social media.

"Over the next few months, the team’s focus is on making that content even better by delivering improvements to the gameplay that matters most to Simmers," EA stated in an official press release. The studio emphasized that their goal is to make the existing game feel "smoother, more intuitive, and more consistent" by listening to community feedback from Discord and other official channels.

This highly anticipated Sims 4 update is scheduled to go live next Tuesday, May 12.
