Eric Barone Shares Insight on Haunted Chocolatier's Development

It's been five years since Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone first shared the idea of Haunted Chocolatier, and since then, there have been occasional updates on the game's progress. While much of Barone's time has been dedicated to refining Stardew Valley, which is currently on sale for 40% off during the Steam Summer Sale, he has not forgotten about his next major project. In a recent blog post, Barone emphasized that the development of Haunted Chocolatier has been slow but deliberate. "I know it’s taking a long time," he wrote. "A big part of that is that I am being very thoughtful about every aspect of the game. The things in the game which the player will be interacting with or using very often need to be 'perfect'. They need to be seamless, clear, intuitive, satisfying, and aesthetic."

The Challenge of Perfection in Game Design

Barone has already confirmed that Haunted Chocolatier will be larger in scope than Stardew Valley, which is great news for fans. However, this also means significantly more work for the developer. The game may feature a bigger map, more characters, and more systems — or all of the above. One area that Barone has invested a great deal of time in is the chocolate-making mechanics. "I’ve been revisiting the recipe book for making chocolates," he said. "As with many things in the game, I’ve iterated on this many times, each time bringing it closer to its final form. To me, it’s not a simple task, as I torture myself over every last detail. This is a UI you will be using fairly often, so it has to be perfect. You need to be able to accomplish your goal with the minimal number of clicks."

Barone also highlighted the importance of presenting just the right amount of information to the player: "There needs to be just the right amount of data presented to the player: not so much as to be overwhelming, but not so little as to be trivial or mundane. And the way that this data is laid out on the page is crucial. If the data is all clustered together, it will be disgusting to look at. The data needs to be grouped into compelling, intuitive, and easy to read/understand groupings. It needs to look appealing and intriguing. And this is just the bare minimum, that players will likely take for granted."

A Vision for Delight and Perfection

Fans of Stardew Valley are already familiar with its intuitive and well-designed user interface. It's easy to take for granted just how seamless the experience feels, which is why Barone's commitment to perfection is so impressive. "I want to delight the player," he said, adding that this means a lot more work will go into iterating on systems "several times before I'm satisfied with it." While it's tempting to want Haunted Chocolatier to release as soon as possible, there's no doubt that Barone's meticulous approach will result in a game that is truly exceptional.

"I’m not in a rush," Barone explained. "It’s a big game, so there are many things for me to fuss over. But, this is what it will take to make a game I’m satisfied with." His dedication to quality is evident in every detail, and it's clear that Haunted Chocolatier will be a labor of love — one that fans will be excited to experience when it's finally ready.
