Everything you need to know about the Assassin's Creed Black Flag remake

The Assassin's Creed Black Flag remake is appearing just over the horizon. Scheduled to dock this summer, Ubisoft seems determined to launch even if they can't keep a secret. This fourth mainline entry remains an unequivocal pirate favorite from the era before Sea of Thieves.

Fans still hold the game dear thanks to the roguish protagonist Edward Kenway and his adventures in Nassau. Now, we finally have the official details regarding the upcoming release of Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced.

Release Date and Platform Details

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is set to launch on July 9, 2026. The game will be available on PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The title carries a price tag of $60 / £50.

The original 2013 release was a massive turning point for the franchise. It bridged the gap between established Templar lore and the Golden Age of Piracy with legendary cameos like Blackbeard and Anne Bonny. Back then, our reviewer Tom Senior awarded the original a glowing 90% review.

What to expect from the Assassin's Creed Black Flag remake

Ubisoft has confirmed that this is a true remake rather than a simple remaster. The game has been rebuilt from the ground up using the latest version of the Ubisoft Anvil Engine, the same technology used for Assassin's Creed Mirage and Shadows. This upgrade brings modern technical features including:

  • Ray-traced lighting
  • Advanced water rendering
  • Realistic weather simulation

Development is being led by Ubisoft Singapore, the studio behind Skull and Bones. Many of the original developers are returning to ensure the game meets the standards of the latest generation of hardware.

Gameplay Overhauls: Combat and Stealth

The combat system has received a significant rework, specifically focusing on improved parries and takedowns. On the stealth side, Kenway can now crouch freely as a standard approach.

Tailing missions have also been updated to prevent frustration. Being spotted no longer results in an instant mission failure; instead, it transitions the player directly into head-on combat. This ensures that while stealth is encouraged, it is no longer strictly required for success.

New Features and Content

Ubisoft is introducing several new elements to flesh out the experience:

  • New story scenes, including a pivotal moment with Edward's wife, Caroline.
  • Three new recruitable officers: Lucy Baldwin, "The Padre", and Tobias "Deadman" Smith, each featuring dedicated questlines.
  • Updated modern-day segments that focus on Edward's internal struggles within the Animus.
  • 10 new sea shanties featuring the artist Woodkid.
  • Ship upgrades, including new weapon enhancements for your vessel.
  • A companion pet, allowing you to have either a cat or a monkey living on your ship.

What remains unchanged?

The core identity of the game stays intact. Ubisoft has stated that keeping Edward Kenway's main story was non-negotiable, and the original map will remain the same.

Crucially, this Assassin's Creed Black Flag remake is not an RPG. Unlike more recent entries in the series, Resynced remains a pure action-adventure title, focusing on the classic gameplay loops fans love.

What has been removed?

Not everything from the original is making the jump. The pirate PvP modes found in the original multiplayer are absent from this version.

Additionally, the game will not include the various DLCs from the original release, such as certain bonus missions or cosmetic items. However, with the addition of new officers and story beats, much of that lost content seems to have been replaced by fresh experiences.
