The Expanse RPG Recasts Its Protagonist After Player Complaints

Owlcat Games has announced a significant change to The Expanse: Osiris Reborn following feedback from the game’s recent beta test. The studio confirmed it will recast the voice actor for the male protagonist after players criticized the performance for lacking emotional depth.

This decision highlights the developers' responsiveness to community concerns, aiming to refine the narrative experience before the game’s full release. While the studio praised the original actor’s effort, they acknowledged that the delivery did not meet their creative standards for the final product.

Addressing Vocal Performance Concerns

In a blog post on the game’s Steam page, Owlcat Games explained the rationale behind the recasting. They noted that while the actor worked hard, the resulting performance felt less expressive than desired.

"While the voice actor for the male protagonist and J put in a lot of good work, they felt less expressive than we wanted," the studio stated. "Because of this, we are changing the voices of the male protagonist and J."

The update clarifies that this change specifically affects the male protagonist and his twin sibling, J. The voice actor for the female protagonist and the female version of J will remain unchanged. This selective recasting suggests a targeted effort to improve the tone and impact of the male-led narrative paths.

Community Feedback and Dialogue Overhaul

It is important to note that player feedback on Reddit extended beyond vocal performance. Many users pointed to broader issues requiring attention, including:

  • A need for a comprehensive dialogue overhaul.
  • Specific story adjustments to improve pacing and coherence.
  • Corrections to the protagonist’s tone, which some found overly cheery given the grim setting.

One player highlighted the disconnect between the character’s voice and the universe’s established linguistics, noting the absence of Belter slang and the lack of expected cynicism. This suggests that the recasting is part of a larger effort to align the audio experience with the source material’s gritty realism.

Reworking J and Future Roadmap

Owlcat Games also addressed criticisms regarding J’s voice lines, admitting that the character’s battle cries had become repetitive during the beta. The studio confirmed that J’s lines are being reworked regardless of the player’s chosen gender.

Additionally, the developers acknowledged that the "ask" system was still a work in progress. They assured players that a full rework of this mechanic has been on their roadmap all along and thanked the community for their insights.

Currently, the name of the incoming voice actor has not been disclosed. The studio is focused on finalizing these creative adjustments rather than announcing casting news prematurely.

Release Details

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is scheduled for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X. The current target window for launch is Spring 2027. As development continues, players can expect further updates on how these narrative and vocal changes will shape the final experience.
