Square Enix has officially unveiled the third installment of the Final Fantasy VII Remake series, titled Revelation. The highly anticipated game is set to launch simultaneously across multiple platforms, including Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, during the spring of 2027. This marks the culmination of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, following the 2020 release of the original Final Fantasy VII Remake and the 2024 debut of Rebirth.

According to Square Enix, Revelation will bring the climactic conclusion to the story of Cloud Strife and his allies. As the world faces the threat of annihilation, the group must confront Sephiroth, who is on the verge of achieving godhood. The party will take to the skies aboard the Highwind, an airship that allows for seamless exploration of the planet. With Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind joining the team, players will embark on an epic journey to stop Meteor, the ultimate destructive force, and prevent the planet’s total destruction.

A New Era of Open-World Exploration

One of the most significant upgrades in Revelation is its expansive open-world design, which Square Enix claims is the most extensive in the series to date. Players can freely traverse the entire world, including both familiar and newly introduced regions such as Mideel and Wutai. The Highwind serves as the central hub for exploration, allowing for seamless transitions between the airship and the world below. This new level of freedom is showcased in the debut trailer, which highlights the game's dynamic environments and the diverse locations players can explore.

Combat Evolution with the FITS System

In addition to its open-world gameplay, Revelation introduces a new combat system called FITS, which stands for Final Fantasy Interactive Tactical System. This system allows players to change their characters' combat styles by equipping different outfits. Each outfit unlocks unique abilities, giving players more strategic options in battle. For example, the Warrior outfit enhances offensive capabilities, enabling a wide range of aggressive playstyles, while the Black Mage outfit specializes in offensive magic, allowing for spell-focused combat.

Square Enix emphasizes that the FITS system is designed to evoke classic Final Fantasy jobs such as Warrior and Black Mage, allowing players to refine their builds and strategies based on their preferred playstyle. This level of customization adds depth to combat, making each encounter more dynamic and rewarding.

A New Cast and Story Arc

The Revelation trailer also introduces new characters and confirms that Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind will be playable alongside the returning cast, including Cloud, Tifa, Barret, Red XIII, Yuffie, and Cait Sith. The story continues to build on the events of previous entries, with the Weapons—massive, planet-born guardians—making a long-awaited return. These colossal enemies pose a unique challenge, as they are indiscriminate in their destruction, forcing Cloud and his team to confront them head-on.

With its expansive world, deep customization, and a powerful new combat system, Final Fantasy VII Revelation promises to be the most ambitious entry in the Remake series. As the final chapter of this beloved trilogy, it aims to deliver a story that fans have been waiting over two decades to see.
