It is wild to think that the developers of Redneck Rampage—a game I enjoyed as a kid, even if it wasn't anything special—went on to create the much more well-received Return to Castle Wolfenstein. This title successfully resurrected id Software's abandoned FPS and laid the essential foundations for its modern revival.

If you are playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein today, you are likely using RealRTCW. This mod, which even has its own Steam page, overhauls, modernizes, and rebalances the 2001 shooter for a widescreen experience.

Bringing Console-Exclusive Content to Return to Castle Wolfenstein

The makers of RealRTCW have announced they are resurrecting the previously console-only prologue as free DLC. Known as the Cursed Sands expansion, it will add seven Egypt-set levels to PC for the first time. This update also brings their unique enemies and variants to the platform.

Massive Customization Options for Cursed Sands

The level of customization included in this update is honestly a bit nuts. Players will have access to several different toggles to tailor their experience:

  • Choose between Xbox or PS2 HUD styles.
  • Select specific loading and briefing screens.
  • Swap between modernized and classic assets with a single click.
  • Use different sound packs from other games in the series.
  • Implement the fire rate from the spin-off Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory.

You can even set the game to randomly pick skins for individual enemies. This means half of the elite guards could be wearing Xbox camo, while the other half have traveled to Egypt in PS2 leather. Cursed Sands will be available on Steam and GOG starting May 6.
