Katsuhiro Harada Launches VS Studio, Exiting Bandai Namco

Former Tekken director Katsuhiro Harada has officially established his own game development company, marking a significant shift in the fighting game industry. Known for his three-decade tenure at Bandai Namco, Harada is stepping out on his own to found VS Studio, a new venture backed by fellow fighting game giant SNK Corporation.

The newly formed studio aims to deliver experiences that are "beyond tradition, crafted to perfection." By leveraging his vast experience, Harada is partnering with SNK—the creator of iconic franchises like The King of Fighters, Fatal Fury, and Samurai Shodown—to build a foundation rooted in high-quality game design.

Decoding the "VS" Identity

The name VS Studio carries multiple layers of meaning, reflecting the studio's core philosophy. According to Harada, "VS" stands for:

  • Video game Software: A nod to the fundamental craft of game development.
  • Versus: Symbolizing the spirit of taking on challenges and competition.
  • Visionary Standard: Representing the studio's commitment to innovation.
  • Volition Shift: Highlighting a dynamic approach to creative direction.
  • Vanguard Spirit: Emphasizing a forward-thinking, pioneering mindset.

As the representative director and CEO, Harada plans to lead the company from its new headquarters in Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo. He envisions a workspace that fosters innovation through a "free, open, and spacious environment," allowing developers to generate memorable games without unnecessary constraints.

A New Chapter After Friction at Bandai Namco

Harada’s departure from Bandai Namco was announced back in December, following a period of public tension between the developer and the Tekken community. His exit comes after significant friction surrounding Tekken 8, which led to numerous controversies that Harada himself had to address on social media.

Key issues that strained his relationship with the IP holder included:

  • The sale of premium stage DLC.
  • Public discussions about the cancellation of Soul Calibur.
  • Controversial attempts to include the KFC mascot, Colonel Sanders, in Tekken.

Harada has been candid about his desire to create an environment where developers can perform at their best. He stated, "Having been involved in game development for many years, I've constantly considered how I want to spend my time as a developer and what kind of environment allows developers to perform at their best. VS Studio is one answer to that question."

What’s Next for VS Studio?

While specific details about the studio's first project remain under wraps, the partnership with SNK suggests a strong focus on high-caliber fighting games. Harada aims to combine "technology, sensibility, and world-class expertise to pursue the ultimate" gaming experience.

The studio is currently seeking new team members who share this vision of delivering the best gaming experiences to users worldwide. For fans of the genre, the launch of VS Studio represents a promising new era for competitive gaming, driven by one of its most recognizable figures.
