Fortnite's Pokémon-Inspired Sprites Driving Player Growth
Fortnite is experiencing a significant surge in player numbers, largely driven by the popularity of its Pokémon-like Sprites. With five new species set to join the roster this week, the game has become even more appealing to fans eager to collect and utilize these unique in-game creatures. On Saturday, over 1.2 million players were active in Fortnite's core battle royale modes, a notable increase that marked the largest player count since March. This spike was further amplified by two "Power Hour" events, which featured an increased spawn rate of rare Sprites.
The introduction of new mechanics focused on extraction, collection, and levelling has also played a crucial role in attracting players. These mechanics allow users to find gameplay-impacting Sprites, level up their power, and ensure their use in future games through sweaty extraction points. The appeal of these creatures is so strong that some fans have begun selling their rare varieties on platforms like eBay. In response, Epic Games has taken action, stating that such activities violate Fortnite's rules and are being addressed.
The game now features several ultra-rare shiny variants of each Sprite. While Fortnite does not permit direct trading between players, it allows for sharing and trading among teammates. This feature has helped circulate even the most elusive creatures, such as the Galaxy Zero Point Sprite, which has a reported drop rate of 0.0000014%. This makes it one of the rarest items in the game.
New Sprite Varieties Arriving This Week
With the upcoming update scheduled for Thursday, June 25, five new Sprite varieties will be introduced:
- Striker Sprite: Provides an Overdrive effect when you Mantle or Hurdle. Unlock it by scoring a goal at the new Football Pitch POI.
- Fishy Sprite: Increases swim speed and grants a brief movement speed boost when you take damage.
- Aura Sprite: Grants a Shock Rock charge when you deal enough damage.
- Boss Sprite: Boosts your max Health and Shield. It can be obtained by defeating any Boss.
- Grim Reaper Sprite: Marks anyone who attacks you for a duration.
These additions continue to enhance the gameplay experience, offering players new ways to strategize and interact with the environment. The variety and uniqueness of each Sprite contribute to the game's ongoing appeal.
More Sprites will be introduced each week, with several fan-designed species expected later in the season. As the game continues to evolve, the community remains engaged and excited about the possibilities that come with each new addition. Have you collected them all?
