Fortnite Zero Build Receives Major Overhaul in May 14 Update

Epic Games is preparing to shake up the Zero Build experience in Fortnite Battle Royale with a significant update arriving on May 14. This patch, scheduled for the final weeks of Chapter 7 Season 2, marks the first time the mode has received a dedicated overhaul separate from the standard build mode since its introduction in 2022.

These changes are designed to address long-standing balance issues and give Zero Build a distinct identity. While Epic has labeled the update as an "experiment," the scope of the modifications suggests a fundamental shift in how the mode will play.

Key Mechanical Changes

The upcoming patch introduces several core mechanics aimed at increasing mobility and reducing frustration:

  • New Utility Slot: A dedicated slot exclusive to Zero Build will allow for more strategic item usage.
  • Glider Re-deployment: Players can now deploy their glider at any time after jumping off tall structures, offering greater tactical flexibility.
  • Unlimited Sprinting: Sprinting while holding your pickaxe will no longer be restricted, enhancing movement speed.
  • Fall Damage Removal: The frustrating mechanic of dying from fall damage has been eliminated entirely.

Is This a Permanent Change?

Epic Games has described these adjustments as a temporary experiment running during the last three weeks of Season 2. This period will serve as a test to gauge player reception and performance data.

However, given that these issues have plagued the mode for years, it is highly likely that at least some of these mechanics will remain in the game beyond the end of the season. The goal is to establish a more balanced and enjoyable gameplay loop for a mode that historically lacked the strategic depth of its building counterpart.

For now, players should prepare for a significantly different flow in Zero Build starting May 14.
