The romantasy genre is officially taking over streaming services. Hulu has secured the rights to adapt Penn Cole’s acclaimed Kindred’s Curse Saga, marking a major new addition to the wave of fantasy romance adaptations hitting screens.

Hulu Adapts Spark of the Everflame for New Series

According to Deadline, the upcoming project will be based on the first book in the series, Spark of the Everflame. The adaptation will carry the simplified title Everflame.

Joining the project as a co-creator is writer and producer Heidi Cole McAdams. Known for her work on The 100, Death And Other Details, and Stumptown, McAdams will help translate Cole's intricate world to the screen.

The Story of Emarion and Diem Bellator

The series follows the journey of Diem Bellator, a healer living in the magical land of Emarion. Once inhabited by immortal beings known as the Kindred, the land is now governed by their scions, the Descended.

The plot centers on the tension between Diem and Luther Corbois, the Prince of Lumnos. As part of one of the most powerful houses in the land, Luther’s entanglement with Diem promises a high-stakes story filled with:

  • Intense slow burn romance
  • High-stakes magical conflict
  • Deeply layered romantic tension
  • Political intrigue within Emarion

"I’m thrilled to be working with Heidi Cole McAdams to adapt The Kindred’s Curse Saga," Penn Cole told Deadline. "She truly understands the core messages of the series and what makes Diem’s story compelling. Heidi has an incredible eye for re-imagining the story for a visual medium while preserving the aspects of the books that readers love most."

The Growing Trend of Romantasy Adaptations

The announcement of Everflame arrives amidst a massive surge in interest for "bookstagram" and social media sensations. Several other heavy hitters in the genre are currently moving through development pipelines:

  • Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros (Prime Video via Amazon MGM Studios)
  • Blood and Ash Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout (Sony Pictures Television)
  • Quicksilver by Callie Hart (Netflix)

While fans were disappointed to learn that the A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) adaptation previously planned at Hulu was cancelled, there is a silver lining. Recent reports indicate that author Sarah J. Maas has regained the rights to her work, leaving the door open for future adaptations of the beloved series.
