Sometimes, a single image tells an entire story of human struggle, ingenuity, and an unwavering commitment to triumph over adversity. This is one of those images.
My colleague Jacob Fox directed me to the r/pcmasterrace subreddit this morning to witness a truly "unorthodox" setup. The post features a Mac mini user attempting a highly experimental method to cool their Mac mini without the luxury of air conditioning.
A DIY Evaporative Cooling System
At the risk of ruining the visual impact of what Reddit user kartikgsniderj has created, the setup is quite literal. To cool their Mac mini, the user has implemented a makeshift cooling tray using heavy ridges of packing tape around the outer chassis.
The process relies on a simple form of evaporative cooling:
- A ridge of packing tape acts as a containment tray.
- Tissue paper is placed atop the device.
- The user "basically sprinkle[s] water drops on top of tissue paper" to lower temperatures.
The goal is to collect any excess moisture within the tape boundary so it does not leak into the sensitive electrical components underneath.
Massive Temperature Drops at Great Risk
While the method looks precarious, the thermal results are hard to ignore. The user reported that temperatures dropped from a sweltering 74°C to 49°C.
An improvement of 25 degrees is significant, and evaporative cooling is a scientifically valid concept. However, using this specific method to cool their Mac mini is an extreme gamble with expensive hardware.
Why You Should Avoid This Setup
Despite the impressive temperature reduction, we urge readers not to attempt this at home. The structural integrity of the tape is a major point of failure. If that fragile seal breaks at a crucial junction, water will inevitably drip into the vents and ports.
There is also a large, chunky power supply located inside the chassis. Water and mains power are a lethal combination, and the risk of a short circuit or electrical fire is incredibly high. While the ingenuity of this DIY solution is notable, it remains a very, very bad idea.
