Despite being in early access, Slay the Spire 2 has quietly become one of the most-played titles on Steam. While the game is already significantly larger than its predecessor, developer Mega Crit has teased a massive roadmap of upcoming content that promises to expand the experience even further.
Massive Content Roadmap for Slay the Spire 2
Mega Crit recently shared a glimpse into the future of the game, detailing several major additions currently in development. Players can look forward to:
- Alternate versions of Acts 2 and 3 (building on the existing Overgrowth and Underdocks forms in Act 1)
- Steam Workshop support for community content
- New experimental game modes
- A brand-new character
- Fresh additions of cards, events, relics, and potions
- The eventual arrival of "true victory"
Beyond these major pillars, the studio is committed to continuous refinements, including bug fixes, balance tweaks, improved audio/artwork, and additional language support.
Why Mega Crit Rejects Deadlines
While the content list is extensive, there is one notable omission from the roadmap: specific release dates. Mega Crit co-founder Casey Yano addressed player inquiries regarding the lack of a schedule, explaining that rigid timelines simply don't fit their development philosophy.
"You might see this and think, but where are the dates! Why can't you promise dates??" Yano wrote. "My response is: It's not what works for us."
Yano emphasized that Mega Crit operates as a small, highly cohesive team focused on maintaining a healthy work pace. Rather than following a strict calendar, the team evaluates tasks weekly to prioritize what feels most impactful. This flexible approach allows for the spontaneous experimentation that defines the series—such as the "Room Full of Cheese" or unique dialogue with the Ancients.
Crucially, Yano noted that the studio will not expand its size just to accelerate production. To protect the quality of the game, he stated: "Exacting deadlines produce sloppy uninspired work and I don't want Sloppy Spire 2, I want Slay the Spire 2."
Testing and Future Updates
For players eager to see what’s coming, Yano mentioned that the beta branch is available for those who wish to test experimental changes and provide feedback. This has become a vital tool for the developers, especially following recent discussions regarding balance changes.
Regarding when current beta features will move to the main game, Yano clarified in a Q&A that updates will only be integrated once they "feel stable in the beta branch." Perhaps most importantly for fans of the original's charm, Yano revealed there is one element the developers refuse to compromise on: "There must be whimsy."
