Last year, Donkey Kong made a huge splash on Nintendo's brand-new Switch 2 console with Donkey Kong Bananza, which quickly gained critical acclaim for its 3D platforming, exploration, and banana collecting. Now, Nintendo is once again calling Donkey Kong's number, only this time that number is 64: Donkey Kong 64 will reemerge, for better or worse, via Nintendo Switch Online early next month. 

DK64 features DK and an entire crew of helpers, from the familiar Diddy Kong to the lesser-known Lanky, Chunky, and Tiny Kong. Together, the five Kongs go out on a 3D platforming adventure to stop King K. Rool from once again trying to steal DK Island's banana hoard.

At the time, DK64 was praised for its platforming, but over time, players have come to malign the game for its tedious Kong-specific tasks, marred further by the clunky switching mechanic, as well as some overly difficult minigames. One minigame in particular, Beaver Bother, has become a pain point for those revisiting the game now. 

Perhaps the game's most prominent claim to fame, however, was its opening theme, the DK Rap. If you've ever heard the tune's "DK! DONKEY KONG! DK! DONKEY KONG!" hook, it's now stuck in your head, and we are sorry for that. 

Donkey Kong 64 lands on Nintendo Switch Online's Nintendo 64 app on June 4. Other recent NSO additions include V-Tetris and Jack Bros. for the Virtual Boy, as well as Pac-Man and The Tower of Druaga for the NES.
