Invader Zim Publishing Rights Acquired by BOOM! Studios
BOOM! Studios has officially acquired the publishing rights for Invader Zim, and the publisher promises to deliver a mix of classic stories, long-sought-after collections, and brand-new original content later this year. While specific details about creative teams, release formats, and exclusive editions are still under wraps, fans can expect to see the beloved characters of Zim, GIR, Dib, and Gaz return in these re-releases and brand-new adventures. The upcoming projects are set to include "entirely new invasions, conspiracies, and catastrophically ridiculous adventures" that stay true to the chaotic and humorous tone of the original series.
"Few properties have maintained the passionate, enduring fanbase that Invader Zim has," said Bryce Carlson, VP of Business Development and Special Projects at Random House Worlds. "We have exciting plans to bring beloved out-of-print material back onto shelves, and BOOM! is going to usher in a new era of DOOM! with brand-new stories that expand the strange and chaotic world fans know and love. The new invasion has begun. You've been warned..."
A Cult Classic with a Rich History
Invader Zim was created by comic book writer and cartoonist Jhonen Vasquez for Nickelodeon. Its original TV run was short-lived, lasting only from 2001 to 2002. The series was canceled during its second season, and six episodes from that season went unreleased until they appeared on DVD in 2004 and later on the Nicktoons Network in 2006.
Since its initial run, Invader Zim has grown into a cult classic, with a dedicated fanbase that has kept the show alive long after its original airing. In addition to a sequel comic run, the series also inspired a Netflix film titled Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus. The property has also brought fans together through three large-scale InvaderCON events, which have drawn attendees from around the world to celebrate their love for the show.
