Jack Black Debuts New Super Mario Song — But Why Wasn't This in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie?
Jack Black has officially debuted a brand new song dedicated to the Super Mario franchise, timed perfectly for the launch of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Following his massive viral success with "Peaches," the voice of Bowser took to The Tonight Show last night to perform this fresh tune while dressed in full Koopa King regalia. This latest release features backing vocals from the rest of the movie's cast, including Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Brie Larson, Charlie Day, and Donald Glover. Yet, fans are left wondering why this catchy track wasn't included in the actual film, marking a frustrating omission for a singer whose previous Mushroom Kingdom ditty was a standout moment in 2023's The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
The Odd Decision to Exclude the Track
It comes as no spoiler that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie does not feature this new musical performance by Black, yet it remains a truly odd decision given how well "Peaches" landed previously. On the very day of the movie's release, Jack Black had a well-oiled song ready to roll out and perform live, which feels even stranger than the initial exclusion. While reports suggest that Black improvised "Peaches" on the spot and this latest track is hardly complex, it remains fun (and easy) to imagine where this song could have fitted into Galaxy's narrative.
At least we are hearing it now, and perhaps if it gains enough popularity, Nintendo will take note of the demand for more music in these adaptations. This could lead to Black getting another chance to show off his singing prowess in the inevitable Super Mario Movie 3, a sequel that Black himself has seemingly teased. The situation is particularly notable because Black is now the face of several video game movie franchises following the enormous hit of last year's The Minecraft Movie. His song in that film, "Steve's Lava Chicken," also went viral and entered both the U.S. Billboard Top 100 and UK charts before being added to the game itself.
A Lyrically Rich Look at Bowser's Perspective
In the new track, Black croons the story of his rivalry with the plumber and his family from a unique villainous viewpoint:
- "There once was a man named Mario, yes you know who I mean,"
- "He had a brother Luigi, who was always wearing green."
- "There was also Princess Peach, who made my heart explode. But they defeated me with the help of a tiny little mushroom man named Toad."
The song picks up speed as Bowser laments his fate and introduces new family drama to the mix:
- "They locked me up and shrunk me down, oh Bowser he was done,"
- "But now they're facing Bowser Jr. and he is my son."
- "Oh Mario and Luigi are now in outer space, and Peach and Toad and Rosalina zollop in my face."
The lyrics continue to detail the galactic adventure, noting that Yoshi has joined the crew as a "cool little freaky dinosaur" before Bowser vows to capture Mario once more. Seriously, if this had actually been included in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, it would have significantly improved the film's overall impact and emotional resonance.
Why the Film Missed Its Mark Without Music
As we noted in our review of the film, "OK is the best word I can think of to describe both the quality of this film," which earned a score of 6/10 from IGN. The movie racks up extra lives by stuffing Easter eggs into the runtime to bursting point, but without a relatable story thriving underneath those references, it isn't as effective as it could have been. Including Black's Super Mario song would have provided a necessary emotional anchor and comedic highlight that the narrative lacked. Hopefully, this new track serves as a reminder of what could have been in the final cut.
