Jagex initiates emergency RuneScape rollback for the most ironic reason possible: Too many runes

RuneScape developer Jagex was forced to perform a general RuneScape rollback earlier today, reverting player progression to the point immediately prior to the game's most recent update. The reason behind this sudden move is as ironic as it sounds: there were simply too many runes.

An overwhelming increase in rune capacity

The issue stemmed from a quality of life update featuring several "game jam projects." As reported by DualShockers, one specific change massively increased the capacity of rune pouches.

Following the addition of the Necromancy Nexus, players had requested that the same capacity be added to existing Rune Pouches. Jagex's Mod Desert delivered on that request, announcing in the patch notes: "Took a little elbow grease but you should now be able to store up to 2,147,483,647 of a type in your pouches!"

However, this massive expansion had an unintended consequence. After the patch went live, it wasn't just the capacity that expanded, but the actual number of runes within them. In some instances, players found themselves holding over a trillion runes.

Why a RuneScape rollback was unavoidable

Jagex acted quickly to prevent what could have been permanent damage to the game's financial stability. In a Reddit post, the developers explained that the bug allowed for the duplication of billions of runes per person, threatening the entire ecosystem.

"The amount of Runes that could flow into RuneScape's economy as a result of this bug would cause irreparable economic damage and challenge the economic integrity of the game," Jagex stated. They noted that the spread was too fast to address through any other means, making the rollback a method of last resort.

The player community has reacted with a mix of frustration and humor:

  • Some players expressed deep disappointment over lost daily progress.
  • Redditor Robinvw24 lamented losing their Arch demon progress, writing: "I totally understand it is needed, but damn it's demotivating to see my lvl back at where i started today :( Time to log off for today and touch some grass."
  • Others found the irony of the situation amusing, despite the setback.

Jagex acknowledged that while the RuneScape rollback "sucks" for those losing progress, the step was necessary to maintain the overall health of the game.
