Stranger Things alum David Harbour has reportedly geared up to join the cast of Lionsgate and Millennium Media’s John Rambo.
The Hollywood Reporter reported that the star officially signed on to the prequel project. Harbour, whose star power has grown thanks to appearances in projects like Thunderbolts* and Violent Night, will appear in a key role as the title character’s commanding officer, Major Trautman.
Major Trautman is a name Rambo fans should already be familiar with, as the character played a large part in First Blood, which John Rambo is a prequel to, as well as Rambo: First Blood Part 2 and Rambo 3. The part was originally played by Richard Crenna before he passed away in 2003.
Harbour joined the John Rambo cast as a late addition, as production in Thailand reportedly finished last month. Noah Centineo of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and Street Fighter fame is starring as the titular gun-toting, bandana-wearing main character. The film's is expected to tackle Rambo's origin story.
The screenplay is by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani, with Sisu's Jalmari Helander directing. Original ‘80s star Sylvester Stallone and Marvel regulars Anthony and Joe Russo are executive producers. Trevor Short is also executive producing with Bonfire Legend’s Dallas Sonnier and Amanda Presmyk.
John Rambo was announced in May 2025, with Centineo boarding the project only a few months later. While we wait to hear a release date for the new Rambo movie, you can check out our list of the 25 best action movies.
