Stranger Things alum David Harbour has officially joined the cast of the upcoming prequel, John Rambo. According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, the actor has signed on for a pivotal role in the Lionsgate and Millennium Media production.
Harbour, who has recently bolstered his profile with roles in Thunderbolts* and Violent Night, will step into the shoes of Major Trautman. As the title character’s commanding officer, Harbour takes on one of the most iconic supporting roles in action cinema history.
Carrying on the Legacy of Major Trautman
The character of Major Trautman is a cornerstone of the Rambo franchise. Fans will recognize the name from his significant involvement in:
- First Blood (the film serving as the basis for this prequel)
- Rambo: First Blood Part 2
- Rambo 3
The role was originally defined by the late Richard Crenna, who portrayed the character until his passing in 2003. Harbour’s casting marks a major new chapter for the character within this origin story.
Production Details and Cast Updates
Despite being a late addition to the project, Harbour joins a production that has already reached significant milestones. Reports indicate that filming in Thailand wrapped last month. Noah Centineo, known for To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and Street Fighter, stars as the titular, bandana-wearing protagonist.
The film aims to explore the gritty origins of the legendary soldier. Behind the scenes, the project features a heavy-hitting creative team:
- Director: Jalmari Helander (Sisu)
- Screenplay: Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani
- Executive Producers: Sylvester Stallone, Anthony and Joe Russo, Trevor Short, Dallas Sonnier, and Amanda Presmyk.
While John Rambo was first announced in May 2025, with Centineo joining shortly after, an official release date has yet to be confirmed. As we await more news on this high-octane prequel, the addition of David Harbour as Major Trautman suggests a massive scale for this reimagined action epic.
