The Sims 4 Has Big Changes Coming Later This Month

Fans of the life simulator are in for a massive treat. A significant base game update is scheduled to arrive for The Sims 4 on May 12, bringing with it an impressive list of approximately 150 bug fixes and brand-new features.

Since its initial launch in 2014, the developers have continuously expanded the world of The Sims 4. Now, the team is shifting focus toward refinement, committing to "making that content even better by delivering improvements to the gameplay that matters most to Simmers."

Major Improvements in The Sims 4 May 12 Update

This upcoming patch isn't just about minor tweaks; it addresses a "Laundry List" of community-requested features. By utilizing player votes from forums and social media, the developers have prioritized fixes for infant autonomy, toddler interactions, and general gameplay stability.

One of the most impactful technical changes will be an increase in the frequency of automatically generated backup saves, providing much-needed security for long-term players. Additionally, a new layering feature is coming to Create a Sim (CAS), specifically designed to support modders and content creators by expanding technical customization options.

Key Fixes for Most Voted Issues

The update tackles several long-standing bugs that have frustrated the community:

  • "Black Photos": Six distinct fixes have been implemented to resolve texture loss in paintings and photos.
  • Infant Care Loops: A fix ensures Sims will no longer repeatedly pick up and put down Infants.
  • Sentiment Fixes: The "Secret Witness" sentiment will no longer trigger when a Sim witnesses a partner WooHooing.
  • Placement Errors: The "Can't place item" bug has been resolved for both new and existing saves.
  • Scandal VFX: A fix for Sims getting stuck with the "Scandal" moodlet, including clearing lingering visual effects in existing saves.

Enhanced Infant and Toddler Gameplay

A significant portion of this update is dedicated to improving the experience for our youngest Sims. Based on feedback from Reddit and Discord, the developers have overhauled infant and toddler mechanics to make caregiving feel more natural and less frustrating.

New Features for Infants

  • Infant Playmat: A new, cute way to keep babies comfortable without needing the floor.

  • Customizable Autonomy: A new toggle in the Options Menu allows players to "Disable Caregiver Autonomy for Infants," making all care manual if desired.

  • Improved Sensory Feedback: Infants will now react with thought bubbles and buffs to loud noises, accompanied by a tutorial to help players manage the chaos.

  • Streamlined Care: Feeding an infant will now take half the time (roughly 15 Sim minutes), and diaper changes at the changing table are 33% faster.

  • Milestone Progression: Tummy Time milestones will now unlock twice as fast, ensuring progression feels rewarding even on shorter lifespans.

Toddler and General Fixes

The update also includes over 25 bug fixes for toddlers, such as ensuring they no longer remain idle while hungry and fixing the "Ask to Read Book" interaction with older Sims. Furthermore, infant and toddler needs will no longer decrease when the active player is on a different lot, making remote caregiving much more manageable.
