Marathon Mid-Season Update Introduces New Endgame PvE Mode
The second season of Marathon is still in its early stages, but Bungie is already giving players a glimpse into what's coming with the upcoming mid-season update. One of the most anticipated additions is Vault Breaker, a new experimental PvE mode designed to offer a fresh challenge in the game's endgame content.
What Is Vault Breaker?
Vault Breaker will allow players to explore the Cryo Archive map in a solo, duo, or crew setup without the risk of encountering other players. This mode focuses on progressively challenging vaults, each offering unique progression as players work their way toward the final vault and its mysterious entity. The experience is tailored specifically for Vault Breaker, ensuring a distinct and engaging endgame for players.
To participate in Vault Breaker, players will need a Sponsored Kit, which can be obtained through the game. Additionally, any gear found in the vaults must be left behind upon exiting the mode to prevent an influx of high-end loot into the general game pool. A new currency called Vault Data will also be introduced, which can be used to upgrade Sponsored Kits or gear for other modes.
What Else Is Coming in the Mid-Season Update?
The update will also bring the first new iteration of the Cradle Evolution system, which allows players to upgrade their characters with persistent improvements. A notable feature is the ability to reset the Cradle back to zero after reaching its maximum level, granting players an additional Energy point and exclusive cosmetics. While these cosmetics will be available later in the season, players can earn them ahead of their in-game release. Furthermore, the Cradle's progression speed will be increased, helping players reach their goals faster.
The Marathon Season 2 mid-season update is scheduled to launch on July 21, with additional quality-of-life improvements to be announced closer to that date. Looking even further ahead, Bungie has confirmed that Season 3 will begin on September 22, introducing major changes to the early game experience, along with new weapons, equipment, and a redesigned Runner shell.
In the meantime, Bungie has been working to expand Marathon's audience, including a brief free trial offered earlier this month. As the final update for Destiny 2 approaches, it has seen a surge in concurrent players, surpassing Marathon for the first time in its history.
