Marathon Season 2 Brings Survival Horror to Night Marsh

Bungie is officially doubling down on the survival horror mechanics of Marathon with the launch of Marathon Season 2. Starting June 2, the update introduces a heavily reworked map designed to make players jump at every shadow. For anyone who has been eyeing the title but hesitated to dive in, the game will be completely free to play from June 2 through June 9.

Playing solo has always felt like an intense cat-and-mouse chase across Tau Ceti, but Season 2 pushes that tension further with the new Night Marsh map. While it shares the same layout as Dire Marsh, this iteration is set entirely after dark and features a much darker atmosphere. Exils will be locked during matches, forcing players to find alternative ways out of the swampy terrain. A newly accessible subterranean zone called Complex Control adds another layer of verticality and exploration beneath the main complex.

The nighttime setting completely reshapes how engagements play out. Bungie designed Night Marsh to feel like a true survival horror experience, intentionally reducing player counts while amplifying environmental threats. To help navigate the pitch-black landscape, developers added several lighting-focused tools:

  • A standard flashlight for basic visibility
  • Vector ammo that illuminates projectiles mid-flight
  • Highlighting grenades that briefly brighten rooms and corridors
  • Signal flares that cast a wide, flickering glow
  • Darksight scopes optimized for navigating terrain rather than pinpointing distant foes

Escaping the marsh won't be as simple as reaching an extraction point. Players must collect Certs from fallen UESC soldiers to unlock resource caches and pay for their exfil. Those same Certs will also grant access to Complex Control, where Bungie promises fresh enemies, hidden mysteries, and high-tier loot.

New Sentinel Shell and Season 2 Weapons

Night Marsh is only the beginning of what Marathon Season 2 has in store. The update also debuts the Sentinel, a brand-new Runner Shell focused on area denial and defensive support. Since launch, players have relied on a rotating cast of shells, but the Sentinel brings a unique tactical playstyle centered around locking down lanes and buffing squadmates.

The Sentinel’s kit revolves around controlling engagement zones:

  • Prime Ability (Defender System): Automatically detonates incoming enemy grenades and missiles while boosting weapon handling for nearby allies.
  • Tactical Ability: Deploys a proximity mine that temporarily roots hostile players in place.
  • Trait Ability: Activates a short-range motion tracker that highlights moving targets on the radar, reminiscent of classic Bungie tracking systems.
  • Passive (Castle Doctrine): Grants temporary damage resistance after taking splash damage and improves close-quarters weapon handling when surrounded.

To complement this defensive playstyle, two new weapons are arriving in Season 2. The KKV-9SD is a suppressed submachine gun built for blistering fire rates and tight corners. Pair it with the D54 Battle Pistol, a three-round burst sidearm optimized for one-on-one duels and close-range skirmishes, to create a highly synergistic loadout.

Free Week Details and Destiny 2’s Final Update

Beyond maps and gear, Marathon Season 2 rolls out faster progression curves, reworked Faction skill trees, a dedicated Duos queue, and the Cradle system. Cradle lets players convert excess loot into permanent stat boosts, streamlining character building for both new veterans and returning operators. Those who dive into the game during the free trial will see their progress carry over if they purchase the full title afterward. The base game will also go on sale across all platforms during this promotional window.

Returning veterans can expect standard seasonal wipes, though Bungie has clarified that core progression and cosmetic purchases remain intact between updates. Looking ahead, the studio continues expanding Marathon with new PvE modes slated for future seasons. Meanwhile, Bungie’s other flagship title is drawing to a close after nearly ten years in development. Destiny 2 will receive its final content update on June 9 before transitioning into a live-service support phase. Following that milestone, industry reports suggest the studio will implement significant layoffs as it shifts focus toward upcoming projects.
