We know very, very little about the next Mass Effect game. In fact, BioWare hasn't even revealed its name yet, so we've all been calling it Mass Effect 5 in the meantime. Since its initial announcement at The Game Awards 2020, the Mass Effect devs have been largely silent for over five years.
Why Mass Effect devs are staying silent
In a 2025 N7 Day post, Mike Gamble confirmed that BioWare is now "heads- down and focused exclusively on Mass Effect." This update provided much-needed reassurance following the downsizing of the developer by EA.
When questioned about the awkward lack of updates for one of the most treasured RPG series of all time, project director and executive producer Mike Gamble kept it simple: "Just busy workin. Not a lot of time for tease."
The developers simply do not have the time to assemble fancy trailers or massive info dumps while they are hard at work constructing the game. This is especially true now that the studio is smaller following the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. It is a frustratingly long wait, similar to the situation with The Elder Scrolls 6, which was announced roughly eight years too early.
When to expect news on Mass Effect 5
While we currently only have two vague CGI trailers and a handful of beautiful concept images, there are a few key dates on the horizon. If you are looking for an update, keep these milestones in mind:
- N7 Day: November 7 (The annual celebration for all things Mass Effect)
- The Game Awards 2026: December 10 (The venue where the game was originally unveiled)
The debate over BioWare's future
Despite the long-awaited return, many fans are fearful that the era of Mass Effect has passed, much like it seems to have for BioWare's similarly beloved Dragon Age.
PC Gamer's Fraser Brown argues that for BioWare to make a true comeback, the studio needs to cancel the project and create something else to find a new identity. While I think there is some truth to that argument, I will still be eagerly awaiting any news on Mass Effect 5, whenever it finally arrives.
