Archetype Studios is developing a new space opera RPG titled Exodus, and while early teasers have led many to compare it directly to the Mass Effect series, Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks has a different perspective on its identity. In a recent interview with The Game Business, Cocks described the upcoming title as being "effectively D&D in space."
Is Exodus D&D in Space?
While the visual similarities to BioWare’s legendary franchise are hard to ignore, Cocks argues that the core DNA of the game aligns with traditional role-playing elements.
"It's a new IP, but it’s not unfamiliar ground to us," Cocks stated. "Exodus is effectively D&D in space. We're familiar with role-playing games, and familiar with how to make good ones. It's a genre we understand."
This high-level description suggests a focus on classic RPG tropes:
- Exploring vast new frontiers
- Engaging in tactical combat
- Gathering loot and managing crew dynamics
- Navigating complex narrative choices
Filling the Mass Effect-Shaped Hole
Cocks is clearly targeting a specific vacuum in the current gaming landscape. He acknowledged that there is a significant demand for high-quality space operas, noting that the genre has lacked a definitive heavyweight for years.
"In 2018 this was true, but I think it's even more true in 2026… it's a space that hasn't had a good game in a long time," Cocks said. "It's been a while since Mass Effect 2 and 3. I think there's a big need in the marketplace for that."
Despite his optimism, the project carries inherent risks. While the audience is clearly waiting for a successor to the space opera throne, Hasbro’s recent track record with its intellectual properties has been mixed. Recent developments include:
- The Sigil Virtual Tabletop: Most of the development team was laid off in 2025 due to monetization challenges.
- Giant Skull Cancellation: A D&D project from the studio founded by Stig Asmussen was reportedly cancelled earlier this year.
- Baldur's Gate 3 Success: While a massive hit, Hasbro’s direct involvement was limited compared to Larian Studios.
When Can We Play Exodus?
Although Exodus is not slated for release until sometime in 2027, players will soon get more concrete information regarding its gameplay and mechanics.
Keep an eye out for upcoming showcases where the game is expected to make an appearance. We can expect a closer look during this year's Summer Game Fest weekend, specifically at the Future Games Show and the PC Gaming Show on June 7.
