Expansion titles have to be snappy and foreboding—something that looks great on a box. In the process of putting this quiz together, I've been genuinely impressed by the spread of naming techniques on offer.
Most of these titles share a common trait: they are incredibly grandiose. This shared sense of scale actually makes them very easy to parody.
Can You Spot the Fake Titles?
Inside each of these 10 MMOs, I've tucked in one deceitful expansion that doesn't exist. Some of them are obvious, while others will have you pulling your hair out so you can be nice and bald like me.
To succeed, keep an eye on:
- Overly dramatic or "epic" terminology
- Titles that feel suspiciously "perfect"
- Thematic consistency with the original game
