The development of the Next-Gen Xbox is facing significant headwinds due to global supply chain issues. Newly appointed Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has confirmed that memory shortages are currently impacting the trajectory of Microsoft's upcoming hardware.
How Memory Shortages Impact Hardware Development
In a recent interview with Game File, Sharma addressed the challenges of transitioning beyond the current Xbox Series X|S ecosystem. She explained that the industry is dealing with a complex "equation" where supply chain volatility directly affects production and consumer costs.
The memory crisis introduces several critical variables that Microsoft must navigate:
- Increasing memory costs
- Impacts on hardware pricing
- Global component availability
The Future of the Next-Gen Xbox Timeline
Despite the uncertainty, Sharma remains focused on delivering a high-quality experience. However, she noted that due to these economic pressures, Microsoft is not yet prepared to announce a specific launch window for the Next-Gen Xbox.
"All of these things are an equation. Memory costs will impact pricing, will impact availability," Sharma stated. "As we think about being where the world plays, we will take that into consideration. So we're not ready to share a launch timeline right now. The world's pretty dynamic."
While the hardware roadmap remains unclear, the CEO emphasized her commitment to core gameplay and ecosystem integration. She noted that her primary focus is to "focus on what's in our control, build a great console to play great games, including your PC games."
