The highly anticipated horror title Paranormal Activity: Threshold has officially been cancelled. Developers Darkstone Digital and DreadXP announced that the project will no longer see a release, citing a lack of support from Paramount regarding development timelines.
Why the Paranormal Activity Game Was Cancelled
The decision to halt production came after negotiations with Paramount failed to secure a necessary extension. Brian Clarke, the creator behind the viral hit The Mortuary Assistant, shared the unfortunate news via Darkstone Digital's X account on Wednesday.
According to Clarke, the project reached a point where additional time was mandatory to meet quality standards. While DreadXP supported the push for more development time, Paramount ultimately declined the request to extend the schedule.
The Difficult Choice Facing Darkstone Digital
Faced with an immovable deadline, Clarke was forced to make a critical decision regarding the future of the Paranormal Activity game. He noted that he was left with two distinct paths forward:
- Rushing development to meet the existing deadline, resulting in a sub-par product.
- Terminating the project and going their separate ways with the studio.
"It became clear that the game needed more time to ensure it was the best it could possibly be," Clarke explained. Ultimately, he chose to cancel the project rather than release something that did not meet his professional standards.
While fans of the Paranormal Activity franchise will be disappointed, this move ensures that the integrity of the developer's work remains intact. For now, the future of the Threshold concept remains on hold.
