Path of Exile 2's 1.0 release won't need to accommodate other game releases, director says—except GTA 6: 'That's a Goliath I don't want to take on quite frankly'

Path of Exile director Jonathan Rogers has long maintained that the timing of competing game launches rarely dictates Grinding Gear Games’ update schedule. For most of the studio's history, Rogers has dismissed concerns about clashing with other major releases, particularly within the seasonal action RPG genre. However, with Path of Exile 2 nearing its full 1.0 launch, that stance is facing a rare exception.

The upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto 6 has prompted Rogers to reconsider his usual indifference to competitor timing. In a recent interview with PoE co-creator and former Grinding Gear Games director Chris Wilson, Rogers admitted that while he typically ignores the release calendar, GTA 6 is a different beast entirely.

The GTA 6 Problem

Rogers was candid about the sheer scale of Rockstar Games' upcoming title. When asked which releases he would actively avoid clashing with, he identified GTA 6 as the primary concern.

"That being said, GTA 6 is a bit of a problem," Rogers said. "If there's a release you're going to avoid, I would say that's the one."

While the community might criticize any perceived delay or schedule manipulation regarding other titles, Rogers noted that the gaming public would "slay us" if they thought Path of Exile 2 was holding back its launch simply because another game was coming out. However, the media landscape surrounding GTA 6 presents a unique challenge that cannot be ignored.

Rogers highlighted the overwhelming marketing power of Rockstar as a key factor in his caution. The publisher is expected to dominate all available advertising channels, effectively buying out literally all the media.

"Anything that is possible to spend money on, I'm sure they'll be spending it on," Rogers explained. "So probably not a good idea even just for that reason alone to launch even on the same weekend as them."

PC Advantage and Release Timing

There is a strategic buffer for Path of Exile 2: it is primarily a PC game. Since GTA 6 is launching first on consoles, there will be less direct player overlap during the initial weeks of Rockstar's release. Nevertheless, Rogers acknowledges that the cultural impact of GTA 6 will be universal, affecting player awareness and engagement regardless of platform.

Path of Exile 2 is scheduled to leave early access before the end of the year, following ExileCon in early November. This timing places its 1.0 launch within weeks of GTA 6's November 19 release date.

While it is unlikely that PoE 2 will be delayed entirely, the specific launch date will likely be chosen to create a buffer between the two juggernauts. Grinding Gear Games has cultivated a massive, loyal fanbase of PC players over 13 years through consistent expansion releases. The excitement for the highly anticipated sequel should remain strong, provided there is enough separation from the hype cycle of Rockstar's game.

David vs. Goliath

The conversation concluded with a nod to the long-standing comparisons between Path of Exile and Blizzard’s Diablo series. Wilson jokingly referenced this history, suggesting that if Grinding Gear Games was comfortable taking on such a "Goliath" in the past, they should embrace the challenge against Rockstar.

"GGG always had the David versus Goliath thing going on, so why not take on Rockstar?" Wilson joked.

Rogers laughed but offered a pragmatic counterpoint to the romantic notion of underdog status.

"Well, yeah, that's a Goliath I don't want to take on quite frankly," he admitted.

This acknowledgment highlights a rare moment of strategic humility from one of the genre's most successful studios. By respecting the marketing dominance of GTA 6, Grinding Gear Games aims to ensure that Path of Exile 2’s 1.0 launch receives the attention it deserves, rather than being submerged in the noise of the industry's biggest release of the year.
