The Verdict on Desktop Hygiene: 84% of You Are Sensible, 16% Are Monsters
It is deeply gratifying to learn that 84% of PC Gamer readers are sensible folk who would never allow their operating system desktop to descend into the chaotic state depicted in our recent survey results. Even more impressive is the fact that a third of you belong to the "zen club," maintaining a completely clear, clutter-free desktop with absolutely nothing on it.
This is the correct choice. This is the way.
However, I must confess: I am a lazy member of that zen club. I do not actually clear my desktop; instead, I rely on the Windows context menu to hide all icons. I find comfort in the knowledge that a viper’s nest of writhing icons and folders exists beneath the surface, provided I never have to look at it.
How We Organize Our Digital Spaces
Earlier this week, we asked our community: How do you organize your operating system desktop? Convinced that a clean desktop equals a clean mind, we wanted to see how the rest of the population manages their digital clutter.
The results paint a picture of a community that largely values order, though a significant minority embraces chaos. Here is how PC Gamer readers organize their primary workspace:
- I remove everything from my desktop: 26%
- I have only a few regularly used icons on the desktop: 24%
- I neatly organize them in specific areas and folders: 20%
- I just let the files and shortcuts fall where they may: 16%
- I just hide the desktop icons, sweeping them under the rug: 7%
- I use an animated wallpaper, so keep it clear of icons: 4%
- I use third-party software to organize them: 3%
The 16% Who Let It All Fall Apart
Adding up the data, a hefty 84% of you are pursuing good desktop hygiene. Whether by clearing the screen entirely or managing the volume and layout of icons, the majority are keeping their systems tidy.
But let’s address the elephant in the room: 16% of readers are leaving their clutter unchecked. This is a worrying number of people who allow their desktops to remain open to the whims of app installers and assorted downloaded files.
As someone with a moderately fastidious nature, I initially thought fewer people would succumb to this digital hoarding. But then I looked at the physical desktop in my own workspace at PC Gamer Towers. I have random courier invoices from years ago and remnants of coolers and PCs that have long since gone to the great recycle bin in the sky.
So, okay, maybe I’m a monster in my own way, too.
Your Turn: Clean Up or Keep It Chaotic?
Now it’s your turn. How do you organize your desktop? Do you keep it clean and clear, or are you free and easy about what happens behind your various windows? Do you have tips to share with the rest of us who struggle with digital tidiness?
Speaking of tidying up, this week I want to go back to the recycle bin. I’m asking when you last cleared it out.
