For longtime fans of the franchise, the announcement of Pokemon Champions sparked immediate interest. While an official battle simulator sounds like a massive step forward for the series, the real standout feature is the promised support for Pokemon Home.

For many players, the draw of the series isn't just about high-level competitive play; it’s about the drive to "catch 'em all." This pursuit of completionism often turns into a decades-long obsession.

The Burden of the Living Dex

Building a complete collection is no small feat. It requires years of dedicated effort, including:

  • Intense grinding for rare encounters.
  • Endless cycles of egg-hatching.
  • Constant trading with other players.
  • Managing transfers across multiple generations.

After twenty years of work, I have successfully built a "living dex"—a collection containing at least one of every single Pokemon. Through the transition from the Game Boy Advance era all the way to the modern Switch era, every single one of my monsters has been safely transferred into the cloud via Pokemon Home.

From Digital Retirement to Active Play

However, there is a growing sense of stagnation within the current ecosystem. Despite the effort required to amass them, my 1,000+ Pokemon currently exist as nothing more than static sprites sitting idle in an app.

Pokemon Home functions effectively as a digital retirement home for legendary collections. It is a storage solution, but it lacks life. With the arrival of Pokemon Champions, there is a hope that these pocket monsters will finally be allowed to stretch their legs and participate in something more engaging than simply sitting in a cloud-based list.
