Resident Evil Trailer Reveals First Look at Director Zach Cregger's Video Game Movie Reboot

Sony has officially released the first Resident Evil trailer online, providing a chilling glimpse into the franchise's upcoming cinematic reboot. Directed by Zach Cregger (Barbarian, Weapons), the film promises a departure from the action-heavy tropes of previous adaptations.

The film is co-written by Cregger and Shay Hatten, featuring a talented ensemble cast including Austin Abrams, Paul Walter Hauser, Zach Cherry, and Kali Reis. While the footage showcases various elements of the new world, much of the focus remains on a single, vulnerable perspective.

Resident Evil Trailer Highlights a Shift from Action to Terror

The newly released Resident::Evil trailer—which recently screened at CinemaCon—primarily features Abrams' character, Brian. He is seen encountering a grotesque figure that bears a striking resemblance to the Dune villain, Baron Harkonnen.

Cregger is intentionally moving away from the "super-soldier" archetype often associated with the series. Speaking to IGN during an exclusive trailer breakdown, Cregger explained his vision for the protagonist:

“I was a massive fan of Austin after working on Weapons, and I'm a bigger fan of him after making Resident Evil with him. He's so fascinating. He's the perfect avatar for the viewer,” Cregger stated. “What I wanted was to do a Resident Evil movie where you're not following a badass with military training, you're following your average gamer like me. If I was thrust into a Resident Evil game, I would be terrified and I would be missing 95% of the shots I took.”

Cregger emphasized that there is a unique tension in watching someone unprepared face certain death. “I think it's just fun to be following somebody with no combat experience whatsoever as they're walking through hell with a machine gun. And Austin is just this perfect, very lovable, but by no means badass guy. And his reactions to the horrors, I love it. I love it.”

Literary Inspirations and Grotesque New Foes

The Resident Evil trailer also offers clues regarding the film's creature design. Cregger teased a scene involving an unsettling encounter in a sewer with a large, hairless, and naked man, though he kept specific plot details under wraps.

The director noted that the character's aesthetic draws heavily from Cormac McCarthy’s novel, Blood Meridian. He specifically cited "The Judge"—a seven-foot-tall, albino, hairless figure—as a key inspiration for this new threat.

“I don't want to say too much about what we can expect from him because it's a surprise, but I just really love the idea of you're moving through a sewer, you have no idea what's in front of you and you come around a corner and you see a gigantic, obese, naked, hairless man just sitting facing you,” Cregger explained.

He added that while this character serves as a "little bit of a nod" to the iconic Nemesis, it won't follow the same formula of a relentless, Terminator-style pursuer.
