I Have Nothing But Respect For This Game That Doesn’t Care About Launching In GTA 6’s Shadow

With Grand Theft Auto 6's release date just around the corner, studios across the industry have been scrambling to adjust their schedules in an effort to avoid the inevitable media and consumer attention vacuum that will follow. This has made months like September increasingly competitive, as developers try to position their games for maximum visibility. While I understand the strategic reasoning behind these shifts, there’s something undeniably admirable about the studios that choose a different path — those that remain unfazed by the looming shadow of GTA 6.

A Bold Move from Keen Games

Keen Games, the indie studio behind Enshrouded, has chosen to forge ahead with its full release, undeterred by the massive presence of GTA 6. The game, which has been in early access since January 2024, is set to launch in its 1.0 version on October 15. Despite the timing — just a month before GTA 6's release — the team behind Enshrouded seems confident in their product.

A PR representative described the situation in a statement to GameSpot: "Despite the goliaths of the industry spending decades on development with mountains of money and millions (billions, perhaps) of players worldwide, asking $80 USD for what is sure to be a monumentally important piece of interactive entertainment, this Early Access title by indie studio Keen Games is ready to be forged in their full release."

Why Enshrouded Doesn't Need to Hide

Looking at Enshrouded, it's clear that the game doesn't need to worry about the competition from GTA 6. The two titles cater to very different audiences and offer distinct experiences. GTA 6 is already the game everyone is talking about, and that chatter isn't likely to fade anytime soon. Meanwhile, Enshrouded has consistently impressed players over the past two years with its eight major updates.

With nearly 48,000 reviews on Steam, Enshrouded holds a "very positive" rating, a testament to its consistent quality and player engagement. During our preview, we described the game as a "multiplayer Skyrim" that gives your group the feeling of being the "Fellowship of the Ring." This kind of praise is hard to ignore, and it shows that the game has already carved out its own niche in the market.

Standing Firm in the Face of a Giant

It's not just Enshrouded that’s choosing to ignore the GTA 6 shadow. Even highly anticipated AAA titles like Fable have had their release dates pushed to make way for the new entry in the GTA franchise. In such a climate, it takes real courage to stick to your original plans.

Earlier, I praised Digital Eclipse's Barbie Rewind collection for its bold release schedule, which kicks off a new era of "Barbenheimer 2.0." Now, I'm doing the same for Keen Games. Their decision to release Enshrouded on October 15 reflects a deep confidence in their product, and I have nothing but respect for that kind of conviction. As the game prepares to enter its 1.0 version, I'm looking forward to seeing what it brings to the table — and I can't wait to play it.
