Roblox Is Rethinking Accounts Following Legal Challenges on Child Safety

The gaming giant is finally taking decisive action after facing intense scrutiny over its platform's ability to safeguard minors. In response to ongoing lawsuits alleging that Roblox failed to protect children, the company announced a complete overhaul of its user account structure. This strategic pivot marks a new era for Roblox, introducing distinct tiers designed to align content and communication settings more rigorously with specific age groups. By implementing these changes, Roblox Is Rethinking Accounts to ensure a safer digital environment for its youngest users while maintaining the platform's core appeal.

New Age-Based Account Categories Launching in June

Founder and CEO David Baszucki revealed that the upcoming update will categorize all users into three specific account types effective this June. The new structure aims to create clearer boundaries between age groups, ensuring that Roblox Kids for ages 5-8 receives a highly restricted experience, while Roblox Select caters specifically to the 9-15 demographic. These categories will automatically adjust content visibility and communication tools based on the user's verified age.

The key features of the new system include:

  • Roblox Kids: Strictly limited interactions for ages 5-8, focusing on curated, safe experiences.
  • Roblox Select: Enhanced safety filters for ages 9-15, balancing creativity with protection.
  • Roblox (Standard): The existing full-access experience for users aged 16 and older.

Baszucki emphasized that these categories will be enforced through a robust new "selection process" system for games. This mechanism ensures that titles available to players under the age of 16 are rigorously vetted against safety standards before they appear in the user's feed.

Mandatory Age Verification via Facial Recognition

To enforce these new rules, Roblox is introducing mandatory age-checks as part of the June rollout. Users will be required to verify their identity through a combination of newly implemented facial-recognition software or by having a parent verify their account details. This move directly addresses concerns regarding underage users accessing mature content or communicating with strangers without oversight.

Despite these stricter measures, Baszucki clarified that the transition aims to minimize disruption for existing players. According to internal analysis, age-checked Roblox players under 16 will retain access to the "majority" of games they were already playing. Furthermore, users aged 16 or older will see no changes at all to their current experience, ensuring stability for the adult portion of the user base while tightening controls where they are most needed.
