Recent revelations have confirmed that scrapped The Mandalorian Season 4 scripts featured Thrawn. Creator Jon Favreau was forced to abandon his plans for a fourth season of the hit Disney+ series after Lucasfilm decided to pivot toward the upcoming film, The Mandalorian and Grogu.
What the Scrapped The Mandalorian Season 4 Scripts Featured
Speaking to SFX magazine, Favreau revealed that the abandoned scripts were deeply integrated into the broader Star Wars narrative. Following the live-action introduction of Grand Admiral Thrawn in the first season of Ahsoka, these stories were intended to bridge several key projects.
The original plans for the fourth season included:
- A heavy focus on the return of Grand Admiral Thranw.
- Narrative setups for the upcoming second season of Ahsoka.
- Storylines designed to lead into Dave Filoni's planned Star Wars team-up movie.
"You can't just take those scripts and turn them into a movie," Favreau said (via GamesRadar+). "There were a lot of characters, it assumed you'd watched the whole show, and it was teeing up what was happening moving into [the second season of] Ahsoka. It was about Grand Admiral Thrawn and following the larger storyline [of this era of the Star Wars timeline]."
Transitioning from Television to the Big Screen
Because the medium changed, Favreau had to rework the story entirely. While the scrapped The Mandalorian Season 4 scripts featured Thrawn, the new film is designed to be more accessible to a general audience.
"This is a completely different medium," Favreau continued, "so I had to start from scratch, essentially. There were certain things I wanted to pursue, like the idea of Grogu being the Mandalorian's apprentice. As long as you understand the archetypes of this hardened warrior with their vulnerable young apprentice, you'll know these characters well, even if you've never seen the show."
Despite the shift, Favreau hinted that the wider Star Wars timeline is still progressing. "There's still a lot of Star Wars in there," he concluded. "You're going to see where things are going [in the wider universe], but that doesn't diminish from the experience of watching it as a standalone film."
Will Thrawn Appear in The Mandalorian and Grogu?
It remains unclear if the blue Chiss villain will make an appearance in the new movie. So far, trailers for The Mandalorian and Grogu have shown no sign of him, focusing instead on other antagonists.
Since Thrawn is expected to appear in the next season of Ahsoka, his role in this film may be limited. However, a cameo could serve as an introduction for wider audiences before the Filoni team-up movie arrives. We will find out more when The Mandalorian and Grogu hits theaters on May 22.
