New leaks have surfaced regarding a scrapped The Super Mario Bros. Movie ending, revealing that Nintendo's 2023 blockbuster was much more ambitious than the version that reached theaters. Freshly-discovered storyboards from the film's development show an earlier version of the Peach and Bowser wedding sequence that featured significantly more guests than the final cut.
Deleted Characters and Cameos
The leaked storyboards suggest several high-profile characters were originally intended for the wedding scene. While some characters like King Bob-omb and King Boo remained in the final film, others were left on the cutting room floor.
Notable omissions included:
- Whomp King
- Wart
- Mouser
- Birdo (a character that ultimately appeared in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie instead)
Perhaps the most surprising element of this scrapped The Super Mario Bros. Movie ending is the planned appearance of Rawk Hawk. As a legendary antagonist from the GameCube classic Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, his inclusion would have been a massive treat for veteran fans.
The Rawk Hawk Connection
Part man and part eagle, the wrestling champion was slated to appear in 3D. This move would have tied in perfectly with the Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Remake on the Switch, which arrived the year after the initial film. While the character's removal is unclear, his presence would have bridged the gap between the movie and the handheld classic.
Details of the Scrapped The Super Mario Bros. Movie Ending
The unused storyboards also reveal a much different sequence for the wedding itself. In this version, Peach and Toad stage a fake argument to facilitate a secret plan. During the ruse, Toad hands Peach an Ice Flower, which she uses to freeze Bowser just in time.
The deleted dialogue provides some comedic relief during the staged fight: "Maybe if the people I led weren't cowardly little spores, I wouldn't have to marry him," Peach says. "You're a rotten Peach," Toad replies.
Once the plan succeeds and Bowser is frozen, Toad even manages a pun: "It looks like she got cold feet."
Nintendo’s Legal Response
The leak has already caused significant friction online. While an animated version of these storyboards can be found via a GameXplain video, it appears Nintendo's legal team is actively scrubbing the content.
Images posted to Reddit have been swiftly removed, and the portfolio of the original artist now displays a 404 error. Despite this, the mystery surrounding the scrapped The Super Mario Bros. Movie ending continues to grow among the community.
The Future of Nintendo’s Cinematic Universe
While these specific details were lost, Nintendo's cinematic future looks bright. Following the massive success of the first film, fans are eagerly awaiting the unannounced, leaked Donkey Kong spinoff.
Furthermore, a third installment seems inevitable. According to Jack Black, a follow-up could potentially launch as early as 2029.
