While the future of Nintendo’s cinematic universe remains a topic of intense speculation, Shigeru Miyamoto has laid down a clear rule for the Super Mario Movie franchise: no "dirty jokes." Despite this restriction on crude humor, the legendary creator has left the door wide open for one of gaming's most notorious characters to join the big screen.
No Room for Crude Humor in the Super Mario Movie Franchise
During a recent interview with the Japanese website Crank In, Miyamoto explained his philosophy regarding the tone of Nintendo's animated adaptations. He expressed a desire to maintain content that is accessible and respectful to younger audiences, famously stating, "I think of children as 'adults, they just don't have as much knowledge yet.'"
To ensure this vision remains intact, Miyamoto revealed he has placed a specific restriction on Illumination boss Chris Meledandri. The mandate is simple: avoid using low-brow or offensive humor to get a laugh.
"That's why I don't want to make them laugh with dirty jokes, and I've even given Chris [Meledandri] a ban on dirty jokes," Miyamoto said (via machine translation).
Could Wario Still Make an Appearance?
The big question remains: can a character as gross-out as Wario exist within these boundaries? Known for his unsavory habits—ranging from the "Wario Waft" in Super Smash Bros. to his frequent nose-picking and garlic consumption—the character presents a unique challenge for a PG-rated script.
However, Miyamoto seems confident that the character's essence can be preserved without breaking his rules. "Oh, that doesn't mean Wario won't be in it, though," Miyamoto added.
As the franchise expands, several factors are at play:
- The Search for a Villain: With Bowser's role established, the third major Mario film (projected for 2029) will require a new antagonist.
- Expanding Universes: A Mario spinoff is already slated for 2028, though it is expected to focus on Donkey Kong.
- Box Office Performance: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has earned an impressive $898 million globally, ensuring future installments, despite falling short of the original film's $1.36 billion run.
While there are currently no official teases regarding Wario's arrival, the possibility of his inclusion remains a tantalizing prospect for fans of the Super Mario Movie franchise. Whether he can be reimagined without his trademark gross-out antics remains to be seen.
